Arkalan Sammal a sage who lives and works in the City of Greyhawk, who is Rary the Traitr's brother.

Description

Arkalan was once a "reknowned sage" of the Free City.[1] In later years, however, he struggles with alcohol dependency which began to affect his life and work.[2][3]

Arkalan primarily does woek as a consulting sage for adventurers in need of information, but has also worked on a work-for-hire basis for the Directing Oligarchy. Despite public opinion about Arkalan, the Directors believe him to be trustworthy.[2]

Abilities

Int 19, Wis 18[2] Later, Arkalan has Int 23,[3] though this may simply be through use of magic spells or magic items, or age-based ability modifiers which were in the core rules in third edition.

Home

Both Rary and Arkalan are originally from Ket, but it is unknown when or why they left. It is only known that by 576 CY, they were both in the Free City.

Relationships

Arkalan is the brother of Rary, who is a former member of the Circle of Eight.

However, when Rary betrayed the Circle, Arkalan disavowed and disowned him, saying,

"While I find it hard to believe that my beloved sibling is responsible for such evil deeds, the evidence against him is overwhelming. To him I say, 'Your crimes are unforgivable. I join with those who call you traitor, and disavow any affection I may once have felt. Brother you may have been, Rary, but brother you are no longer. You are an outcast and a stranger to me'."—Arkalan, 584 CY[4]

History

Prior to the Greyhawk Wars and the Day of Great Signing, Rary would travel to the Free City to visit with Arkalan for as much as several weeks at a time, and have "ferociously learned conversations, which stretch well into the early hours."[5]

After Rary's betrayal, however, there was bad sentiment against Arkalan, despite his having nothing to do with his brother's actions and having condemned them, and publicly disowning Rary. The public as suspicious of him, and he was terminated from his long-standing position at Grey College in 585 CY.[2]

Though he greatly dislikes being a hired sage, selling knowledge in a mercenary manner, he does so to have money for his excessive drinking.[3]
