Cariel Mansharn is a former high-ranking member of the Union of Merchants and Traders, and a former Directing Oligarch from the City of Greyhawk.

Personality

Cariel Masharn is "selfish but bright;" and an "excellent troubleshooter on short-term projects but has a short, nasty temper."[1] He is "renowned for his volatile temper."[2]

Abilities

Mansharn is given class levels variously in different editions and sources. The main key is that he is both a primary combatant and a spellcaster, specifically an arcanist. In second edition, he is a Fighter 6/Wizard 4. In third edition, he is described as a Duskblade 8—which is a class specific to that edition, but is "a quintessential hybrid character, simultaneously a potent spellcaster and an efective melee combatant."[3]

Possessions

Mansharn owns a cloak of displacement, girdle of protection +3, and a ring of the ram.[4]

Activities

"Among Carie! Mansharn's first projects upon achieving Director positions within Greyhawk City's ruling Oligarchy and the Merchants' and Traders' Union was the launching of a long considered (but ever dismissed) trading company—the Pale Falcon Market Company."[5]

"Cariel Mansham negotiated a contract with (then Crowned Prince) Lynwerd of Nyrond to establish a semi-independent farming estate on abandoned lands north of Midmeadow. The majority of workers and staff are made up of Nyrondese, some of them returning refugees encouraged by Nyrond's slow recovery. The Hepsclen estate also acts as a waystop and storehouse for trade expeditions across the eastern Flanaess."[6]

Relationships

Cariel's half-brother Ertthin Mansharn (NG male human Ftr2), is the innkeeper of the Whitehorse Inn in the Thieves' Quarter of Old City.[7] They are on close terms, and Cariel often stays at the inn.

History

When Ren o’ the Star (male half-elf Ftr7/Mag7), the former Guildmaster of the Union of Merchants and Traders, was murdered over gambling debts in 583 CY,[8] he was replaced as Director by Mansharn.[8][9]

Cartel Mansham was brought into the Oligarchy after the death of another Director from the union, Ren o' the Star, during the Greyhawk Wars. He is known to be unpleasant if crossed, but very able as a troubleshooter.[9]

In Living Greyhawk

During the Centennial Celebrations in summer of 598 CY, Cariel Mansharn "exploded in the street near the River Gate."[2] The City Watch did not immeditately classify it as a murder.[2] However, Turin Deathstalker was later accused, and it was confirmed that Deathstalker had murdered him, and "caused the death" of four other Directors.[10]
