The County of Cryllor is a province in western Keoland.

History

Founding

The western reaches of Keoland were first settled circa -242 CY, when Keoland's expansion under its early kings first grew the state to encompass its modern boundaries, including what is now the County of Cryllor.

The city-states of Flen and Cryllor were subsequently established to fortify the western holdings. Rulership was given to a noble family of Oeridian ancestry, who also gained a seat on the royal court of Keoland. Flen and Cryllor have since been rivals, competing to dominate important trade routes in and out of Keoland.

The precise date of the county's establishment is difficult to pin down. It was founded no earlier than -242 CY, when Keoland first expanded as far as the Javan River, but no later than -230 CY, when Keoland expanded past the Javan River to establish Sterich.[1]

Recent history

The lands west of the river, referred to as the trans-Javan region, were captured by Keoland during the Greyhawk Wars (582-584 CY). The Count of Cryllor ostensibly captured these lands as a buffer region, but retained the land following the Pact of Greyhawk.

Cryllor has been largely unaffected by the giant raids from the Jotens which afflict the County of Flen and the Yeomanry.

The County of Cryllor has recently angered the Yeomanry by conducting mining operations in their Little Hills, despite such operation explicitly forbidden by treaty. Count Manz has long wished to annex this mineral-rich territory, but he lacks political support in the Court of the Land.

In Spring of 591 CY, Count Ignaz Manz was stricken with a mysterious and possibly supernatural illness, with the clerics of his court unable to cure him by normal means. His daughter Lora, who serves as Lady Regent in his stead, soon made controversial political decisions; she called a general muster in response to orc bandits, a power normally reserved to the Count, and reversed her father's policy of supporting the exclusion of non-humans from local guilds.[2][3]

Geography

Borders

The County of Cryllor is located in western Keoland, encompassing the flatlands south of the Good Hills. It is the only region of current-day Keoland which extends past the Javan River, with its western border instead defined by the mountain range known as the Jotens and the Little Hills.

Major settlements

The county is based around the city of Cryllor, a major trade hub. It is the fourth largest settlement in Keoland, with a population of 8,400 as of 591 CY.[1]

People

Population and demographics

The Good Hills in particular are populated by a large number of gnomes.

According to the Keoland Census of 589 CY published by the Living Greyhawk Keoland website, the population of the County of Cryllor is 87,498, including 76,988 humans, 5,221 dwarves, 2,639 gnomes, 1,668 halflings, and 982 half-orcs. There also 135,463 poultry and 63,747 meat and dairy.[1]

Society and culture

Events

An annual swordmeet is held in the County of Cryllor, known as the Tocsin of Kelanen, named for the hero-deity of swords. It takes place annually during the festival week of Brewfest.

Government

The County of Cryllor is a feudal province of the Kingdom of Keoland. It is currently ruled by Lord Ignas Manz, a legendary warrior and self-styled merchant prince. Manz is uninterested in the politics of Niole Dra, and is poorly received there. He is considerably more popular with his subjects, who he rewards with generous festivals and support.

Rulership of Cryllor has changed hands several times between various noble families.

Economy

Resources

The County of Cryllor is rich in mineral wealth, with numerous mines of ore. Count Manz offends the gnomes of Plim's Delve with his unscrupulous mining methods, but he is generous with the wealth recovered from this industry and as a result enjoys widespread support among his people.

A great deal of trade is done with the lower Good Hills. Metals are imported from there to the city of Cryllor, whose artisans are renowned for fine metalwork.

Currency

The County of Cryllor uses the standard currency of Keoland: the platinum griffon (pp), gold lion (gp), electrum eagle (ep), silver hawk (sp), and copper sparrow (cp).
