The Ducal Guard is the standing army of the Duchy of Urnst, directly answering to the Duke. It has a nominal strength of 6,800 soldiers, organized into 34 units across the Duchy. The areas covered by the units are called Marches that sometimes cover multiple counties. While primarily composed of melee and archery-focused troops, it also includes spellcasters known as "Battle Aides."[1]
Ranks
Ranks within the Ducal Guard:
- Guard--The rank of Guard is the lowest and most common in the Ducal Guard. Most holders of this rank prefer military service over farming or other menial work. They are generally uneducated, though exceptions exist. A guard's insignia is a vertical lance
- Guard-at-Arms--A Guard-at-Arms is a soldier who has proven loyalty and skill, ranking just above a standard Guard. A Guard-at-Arms insignia is a vertical lance with a pendant.
- Battle Aide*--Inexperienced Battle Aides are assigned to squads to gain field experience and learn the army’s techniques. While they hold the same rank equivalency as a Petty Sergeant, they are never given a command of their own. A Battle Aide's insignia is three stars forming a triangle, broad side down.
- Petty Sergeant -A Petty Sergeant is a troop leader in the Ducal Guard, commanding a squad. They typically lead routine patrols. A Petty Sergeant's insignia is a pair of crossed lances.
- Senior Battle Aide*--Senior Battle Aides are experienced spellcasters who have served in the field and understand troop coordination. They are removed from squad-level duties and assigned to full units, often overseeing one or more Battle Aides. While they hold the same rank equivalency as a Master Sergeant, they are never given a command of their own. A Senior Battle Aide's insignia is three stars forming a triangle, broad side down, with a larger star in the center.
- Master Sergeant--Master Sergeants are the highest-ranking non-officers in the Ducal Guard, leading large patrols and coordinating attacks. They are veteran soldiers respected by their troops and often manage unit operations with minimal officer oversight. They also handle administrative tasks essential to running the unit. A Master Sergeant's insignia is a triangle formed by three lances.
- Subaltern--Subalterns are the lowest-ranking officers, often young nobles seeking prestige. They command squads of 10-20 troops and oversee their care and training, typically relying on their Petty Sergeants for guidance. A Subaltern's insignia is a rampant golden bear.
- Lance Colonel--Lance Colonels command A Ducal Guard unit of around ten squads. They oversee Subalterns, Petty Sergeants, and a Master Sergeant. A Lance Colonel's insignia is a rampant golden bear on a silver triangle.
- Command Battle Aide*--Command Battle Aides are elite spellcasters advising the Colonel on intelligence, strategy, and magic. They oversee lower-ranking Battle Aides, aid communication, assist with fortifications, and maintain the outpost’s arcane library. While they hold the same rank equivalency as a Colonel, they are never given a command of their own. A Command Battle Aide's insignia is a golden staff inside a triangle of three golden stars, broad side down.
- Colonel--Colonels command multiple units in the Ducal Guard, typically overseeing between four and ten units as a cohesive fighting force. A Colonel's insignia is a rampant golden bear on a silver triangle, bearing a raised lance with a flying pendant.
- Lord-Captain--Lord Captain are typically given special commands or are second in command to a Lord Commander. Lord-Captain's insignia is a rampant golden bear on a six-pointed silver star.
- Lord-Commander-Lord Commanders, also known as March Wardens and oft times used together, typically command the Marches within the Duchy. These command roles are vital to keeping the Duchy of Urnst safe from humanoids and other evils like Rary from invasion. A Lord-Commander's insignia is a rampant golden bear on a six-pointed silver star.
- Lord-General-The Lord General is the highest ranking member of the Ducal Guard and is responsible for the entire army's readiness. The Lord-General's insignia is a rampant golden bear on a six-pointed silver star, bearing a raised lance flying a pennant with a silver star.
