Herzog Akitrom, also known as "Herzog Akitrom the Merely Worried,"[1][2] was described in the parody Castle Greyhawk as lord and master of Castle Greyhawk for a period in the 570s CY-580s CY.(but see background info below) Akitrom tried to turn the ruins of the castle into a tourist attraction with little success (particularly after the failure of the Herzog's "Fireball Fun in the Forest" program,[3] a promotion meant to attract trigger-happy mages, but ending up merely enraging a circle of local druids, the Golden Bough).[3] Akitrom had also established high-class lodgings for adventurers who might wish accommodation while delving the dungeons of the castle.

Akitrom lived in the castle with his daughter, the Princess Risotta, and hosted many foreign diplomats (as part of his scheme to develop the property as a tourist destination), though their tenure as the owners of the property soon came to an abrupt and undisclosed end.

Herzog Akitrom first appeared in WG7 Castle Greyhawk (1988), and was later mentioned in The City of Greyhawk, "Gem of the Flanaess"(CoG) (1989).
Due to the explicit statement in The Adventure Begins that the events in Castle Greyhawk were "not for use in a straightforward and serious Geyhawk campaign,"[4] some fans do not include the NPC, despite also being detailed as the ruler of Castle Greyhawk in CoG. He was mentioned in neither Greyhawk Ruins nor Expedition to the Ruins of Greyhawk.

Name

Herzog is Akitrom's title (in German, "Herzog" means "Duke"). He is referred to as the Herzog throughout (as in "... the Herzog's 'Fireball Fun in the Forest' program").[3] unless also used with his given name, (as in "... only Herzog Akitrom and his fair daughter ..."). This is typical usage for royal and noble titles.

"Akitrom" is an anagram, simply a backwards spelling the author's name, (Chris) Mortika. Mortika wrote "What’s Happening Now at Castle Greyhawk", the introductory chapter in WG7 Castle Greyhawk, in which Herzog Akitrom is found.
