Jawal Severnain is the Head Librarian at Greyhawk's Guild of Wizardry.
Description
Jawal Severnain is a male drow. He typically wears a cowl, but he has "sharp aquiline features, inky black skin, silver hair, and piercing violet eyes".[1]
Personality
Severnain is known for being "peaceable but humorless" and "monastic".[1][2] He is frequently "officious" and "cool and superior" because he "has little time for unnecessary requests"[3]. He does not follow typical drow culture and is considered a "renegade".[3]
"Jawal's monastic existence and devotion to his work has led him to view most others as his inferiors; he has little respect for anyone but archmages and acknowledged masters of 'the Art.'"[1]
Home
Severnain keeps quarters in the Guild of Wizardry[1] where he is "most comfortable in the quiet, gloomy shadows of the musty book stacks."[3]
Abilities
Str 10, Dex 16, Con 7, Int 18, Wis 12, Cha 10[1][2] Innate spells and Spell resistance (as drow).
Activities
Severnain is known to rarely leave "his" library unless requested by a few rare individuals, such as Kieren Jalucian or members of the Circle of Eight. Severnain is essentially cloistered at the library—taking his meals (brought by Guild Porters), sleeping, and working there.
He absolutely detests bright lights, as would be expected from his drow heritage, and Jawal keeps the library somewhat dark. He requires all visitors to use small, magical lights and flames aren't allowed.[1][2]
Severnain has interest in the lost Incabulum of the Forgotten City, a leather folio of looseleaf parchments, once found in the Sea of Dust, the ancient remains of the Suel Empire. He wants to see the book found and catalogued into the vaults of the Guild Library, and copies of it made before the "dry, brittle pages" are damaged.[4]
Relationships
Among those Severnain respects are Mordenkainen and Kieren Jalucian, the latter of whom he is "firm friends" with[1], and who trusts him implicitly.[3] He also respects members of the Circle of Eight.
He also formed a strong relationship with Head Porter Darnak Khorshkan during Darnak's time at the Guild, before Darnak's post-war retirement.[2] He would occasionally stop to share a pipe and drink with Severnain in the library. Darnak's daughter Dunar Khorshkan took her father's place as Head Porter.[2]
Severnain is also very good friends with Philidor the Blue, who "charmed the socks off" Severnain.[5]
However, he loathes Heironymous Tigana, the Guild Alchemist, and the former Mage of Exchange, Kondradis Bubka. He feels they don't have "true dedication to the magical art and being merely “in it for the money.”[6]
History
Jawal Severnain was appointed Librarian of the Guild of Wizardry by Zagig Yragerne during Yragerne's tenure as Lord Mayor of Greyhawk and has served for more than 170 years (in 591 CY).[1][2]
