== History ==
Use of the title Overking began in the year [[1 CY]] ({{Date|1|CY|OR}}), when Grand Prince [[Nasran]] of the Kingdom of Aerdy declared peace across his empire, naming it the Great Kingdom of Aerdy.

The title was used by all successive rulers until the collapse of the Great Kingdom in [[586 CY]] (see [[Rulers of the Great Kingdom]]). Since then, the title has been claimed by rulers of its two successor states: the [[Great Kingdom of Northern Aerdy]], and the [[United Kingdom of Ahlissa]].

== Terminology ==
The name ''Malachite Throne'' is sometimes used synonymously for the office of the [[Great Kingdom]]'s monarch, particularly during the reigns of Ivid I to Ivid V.  During that period, it refers to the [[Malachite Throne]], an artifact of great power which served as the Overking's seat of office. The term is sometimes used, perhaps ahistorically, in reference to the office of Overkings at any point. 

Prior to the succession of Ivid I, the throne of Aerdy had been known as the Throne of the Sun. When Ivid came to power, he had this throne smashed up and distributed to his soldiers for firewood.<ref>''Mysterious Places: Cauldron of Night''</ref>

Since the Great Kingdom's dissolution, the office of Overking of the [[Ahlissa|United Kingdom of Ahlissa]] is referred to as the Nightingale Throne.
