'''Phost''' trees are similar to shaggy-barked oaks, with leaves twice as broad as they are long.{{csb|WoG|7|Catalogue}}{{csb|FTA|51|Atlas}} The phostwood trees have a bioluminescent quality similar to "foxfire" after they have died and begun to decay (about a year). This effect causes to the eerie light of the [[Phostwood]] forest.{{csb|Folio|27}}{{csb|LGG|141}}  Photwood can completely crumble in just a few months, if not kept dry or if handled roughly, but last longer otherwise.{{csb|WoG|7|Catalogue}}

Though the phost is a broadleaf, it is not a hardwood.  Phostwood is difficult to season, and it is often used for mundane things like firewood or kindling.{{csb|FTA|51|Atlas}}

"Luminous paste" is made priarily from phostwood.  The wood is mashed and pulped, and mixed with other components into a paste which is visible at night.  It can be used to make trail markers, signal runes, and is even used by scouts and rangers to make marks on their equipment or upon their person to silently identify themselves to friends in the darkness.  Luminous paste is stored in jars sealed with hard sap to preserve freshness.{{cite dragon|A1998|100|Falcon's Bazaar}}
