Storm Keep is the headquarters of the Mountaineer Militia, nestled in the Abbor-Alz hills southeast of the City of Hardby.

Description

Storm Keep has an outer wall surrounding internal buildings.[1]

History

The former occupant of the keep, a wizard by the name of Melandril, escaped to the Scarlet Brotherhood to participate in its monster-breading program.[2] Melandril abandoned the tower and it began to fall into ruin before being claimed by the Mountaineers.

During the Greyhawk Wars the keep was cleared and repairs begun by the Greyhawk Mountaineer Militia.[1] Work continued post-Wars and a dozen dwarven craftsmen oversaw the construction.[1] The work was "largely complete" in 585 CY.[1]

Geography

The name "Storm Keep" comes from the small lake ("Storm Lake"[3]) north of the keep that has its own strange weather system.[4]

People

The Mountaineer Militia are headquartered in Storm Keep. The soldiers of Storm Keep have a very high morale, are well-paid, and it is a sought-after posting for the Mountaineers.[1]

Garrison

The Mountaineers' main post at Storm Keep has a force of 86 men in total (in 585 CY), as follows:[5]
  • Carstane Geronten (Ftr12)—the garrison commander
  • 2 wizards—one an 8th-level mage, and the other a 7th-level specialist diviner.[1]
  • 40 "ordinary" militia with minimum Con scores of 13, all with bow proficiency and great ability in mountaineering.
  • 20 skymen[6](also called "skyriders", "skypilots",[7] or "skyrangers")[2] of levels 3-7 who use griffons as mounts to spy out the lands. One of these skyriders is Rhuandyr Fallonis, (male half-elf Ftr6/Wiz6) who is rather overeager with the wand of fire he carries, if a suitable monstrous target can be found.
  • 10 "stablers": fighters and rangers who attend to the griffons, train them, keep them in good condition, and suchlike. Many of these men have singular secondary skills and talents such as Herbalism, Astronomy, and Weather Sense, so that this group is almost a set of irregulars unto themselves.
  • 12 officers: sergeants and lieutenants of levels 4-9.

Schinus Balint, the Commander of the Cairn Hills Force, sometimes visits Storm Keep.[8]

Resources

Storm Keep is not self-sufficient. It must buy provisions from nearby places such as the village simply called Fishtown (pop. 120). It's survival is because it supplies fresh fish to the garrison.[9]

Rumors and legends

It is rumored that the dungeon levels below the stronghold may remain unexplored.[1]
