Galda trees bear a refreshing, if salty, nutritious cone-shaped fruit. In the spring the fruit is whitish, but it matures to a golden hue. The fruit becomes ripe as winter ends and spring begins, and remains so for four months.[1] Its seeds are high in protein. The bark of the galda tree is yellowish and its leaves are yellow-green. The trees grow about 30 feet in height.
Distilled Galda oil is produced by squeezing the pulp from Galda trees of the Cairn Hills and is made into a "sweetly aromatic"[2] extract used in oil lamps[2][3] and burns almost 50% longer than most other normal oils.[2] It is also used in cooking for meat glazes and baking pastries.[2] Galda oil is considered an "expensive luxury" for use as lamp oil (by common comparison—one pint costs nearly three times normal lamp oil).[2][4]
