Yrag the Lord is a noble of the Free City of Greyhawk and a former member of the Citadel of Eight.

Description

Yrag is stout and hardy, with extraordinary strength. His other attributes are also well above average. He stands over six feet tall, with broad shoulders and flaxen hair. Yrag is watchful and cautious, generally not investing his time in something unless it is with people he knows and trusts. His aging is delayed through magical means.

History

Yrag was a homeless child secretly raised by the archmage Zagig Yragerne; he is named after his adopted father, and now worships Zagyg as a god.

Shortly after 561 CY (when Yrag was already around 175 years old), Mordenkainen and Bigby recruited him into their adventuring party, the Citadel of Eight. He traveled with the group on such adventures as their expedition into Maure Castle. With Robilar, Yrag is said to have been instrumental in the capture of Bluto Sans Pite; both he and Robilar were ennobled by the city's Directing Oligarchy for their services to the city. He did not formally renounce his allegiance with the group until after the Greyhawk Wars, when he and Mordenkainen had a falling-out over long-term strategic policy.

Yrag is romantically involved with Karin Keoffel, the owner of the Fruit of the Mill, a wine shop in Greyhawk's Artisan Quarter. She is his greatest love and greatest weakness.

Yrag is secretly in charge of Ford Keep west of Greyhawk, but he rarely visits anyone in the city anymore, save for Karin, Nerof Gasgal, and Captain-General Tigran Gellner. In order to protect his identy, he goes by the name "Yr" (prounounced "ear") these days, which is a common enough appellation.

Yrag suffers the enmity of a cabal of extraplanar spellcasters and demons. Their demiplane stronghold was destroyed by Yrag and his associates, and they have vowed revenge. As a result, Yrag must stay constantly on the move, and he cannot visit Karin as often as he would like.

Creative origins

Yrag, Mordenkainen, Bigby, and Riggby, as depicted in Mordenkainen's Fantastic Adventure (1984).

Yrag was originally a character played by Gary Gygax. His name is "Gary" spelled backwards.

Yrag was possibly intended to be the same as Eraj, described as one of the guardians of Mordenkainen's Obsidian Citadel in the City of Greyhawk boxed set, although they have different alignments, names, and levels.
