Phoebus was a human fighter who was reincarnated as a lizard man.

Description

Phoebus is particularly large and strong for his reptilian species. Depicted in The Rogues Gallery, he wears nothing but boots and a loincloth, carrying a "finely-made trident"[1] and a longsword.[1][2] He favors a style similar to traditional garb of lizardfolk tribes, dressing in a bearskin loincloth and knee-high displacer beast leather boots.[1]

Personality

Phoebus is patient, intelligent, good-natured, and tactful.[2][3] "Due to the attention his own condition draws, he has learned to be tolerant of others. But his patience is not infinite."[2]

Abilities

Str 18, Int 14, Wis 9, Dex 17, Con 18, Cha 15 (at 10th level)[4]

Phoebus is multilingual, speaking several languages[1][2] and is more intelligent than most lizardfolk.[1]

Possessions

Phoebus has been known to own many magical items including a +1 sword, a +1 trident, 2 figurines of wonderous power (golden lions), bracers of defense AC3, a bag of holding, and a ring of fire resistance.[2]

Relationships

Phoebus has a few decidedly rare "blood kin," great friends who have sealed their bond with him in a ritual involving the sharing of blood and a tattoo shaped like the sun on their wrist. If one of these "kin" were to die, the others would feel an instant searing pain throbbing from the tattoo. They would then be able to locate the body by concentrating on the tattoos. The tattoos grow more and more painful (though never causing actual damage) the nearer to the fallen body the bearer comes.[2]

History

Once a 10th-level human fighter, Phoebus died on a quest [3] in an unnamed dungeon in the Cairn Hills.[1] With no cleric available, his companions were forced to have him reincarnated by a druid.[1][3][4] Eventually he retired, becoming the mayor of the bucolic village of Greatrock on the shore of Woolly Bay in the Domain of Greyhawk[3] for "many years".[1]

At some point (by 597 CY), Phoebus traveled to Irongate and discovered the portal to the World Serpent Inn. Enjoying the relative anonymity of a place where he rubbed shoulders with beings as varied as efreet and githyanki, he decided to live there, while working as a bodyguard. For once, he no longer must worry about being treated differently.[5]

Creative origins

Phoebus was originally a character played by Jeff R. Leason.[4]
