The Adri Forest is a large broadleaf forest ranging between the Great Kingdom of Northern Aerdy and the United Kingdom of Ahlissa.
Ecology
The Adri was once part of a vast deciduous forest that once stretched from the Flinty Hills to the Lone Heath and included the present Grandwood Forest. But imperious "land-clearing for farms, fires, logging, and woodcutting"[1] have long since turned much of the once great forest into pastures and farmlands for the Aerdi peoples. The Adri is now about half of its original size. The Harp River flows through the Adri on its way to Relmor Bay.
Flora and fauna
Fruits nuts, and mushrooms are harvested from the forest and fish are taken from the Harp River.
The Adri is filled with game animals of all kinds, including deer, rabbits, squirrels, mink-like creatures, and large birds. The animals of the forest supply hunters with furs, trophies and food[1]. "The game within the woodland [is] plentiful—all sorts of bears, wild boars and sows, elk, deer, wolves, lions and smaller cats too, aurochs and herds of wild cattle, plus the usual variety of smaller sorts of game."[2] There is a particular breed of "gigantically antlered deer" common in the area.[3]
People
Wood elves and humans are found within the forest, along with a small number of high elves and gnomes. The elves and gnomes in the forest tend to keep to themselves and guard their territory fiercely. Rangers lead armed human foresters, mostly those who have retreated from more civilized lands to live in small simple communities, in resisting incursions into the Adri by either Ahlissa or North Kingdom.
There are also roughly 1,000 orcs and 500 gnolls and a small number of bugbears who are indigenous to the forest, though most foresters manage to avoid them. Their numbers are shrinking however, as they are being forcibly recruited into various militias. The forest also host a faerie population, most notably a large population of brownies, who often live near the forester's hamlets, since the foresters tend to leave offerings of milk, sweets, and beer. The brownies also have been known to warn Prisstyne's rangers of various dangers.
Notable individuals
Religion
At least a half dozen druidic faiths can be found among the residents of the forest, including followers of Beory, Atroa, and Phyton, though the most prominent is worship of Obad-Hai. Obad-Hai's Archdruid Immonara dwells here. Ehlonna's faithful in the Adri are very militant[1] and support the rangers, though they don't have a leader. They are often spoken for by Lisara Elmhern.
Resources
The lumber taken from the fine woods of the Adri is used for everything including "shipbuilding, homes, furniture, and weapons"[1]
Features and settlements
The Ahlissan city of Innspa is located on the banks of the Harp, where the southern tip of the Flinty Hills meets the Adri. The town of Elversford, with a population of about 1,000, is located approximately eighty-five miles east-southeast of Innspa on the east bank of the Harp[1] deep inside the Adri.
It is rumored that the ruins of a legendary elven city lie at the heart of the Adri.[1] This region of the forest is called the Coldwood and is said to be a dangerous place. The local elves, Sentinels of the Adri, prevent anyone from going there and even avoid the place themselves, lending an even more mysterious atmosphere to the location.
Goldchasm is a dangerous 15-mile narrow stretch of the Adri where constantly changing rocky chasms cleave hundreds of feet below the forest floor, and cave complexes honeycomb some of the rifts.
