Hendrenn Halgood is a walled city in the Kingdom of Nyrond.

Geography

Hendrenn Halgood is a walled city located on the trade route between Mowbrenn and Borneven. It is located in the lands between the Franz River and Duntide River, which is a fertile area of Nyrond with much grain-growing and cloth-weaving outside the cities.[1]

History

The population suffered under a heavy tax burden after the Greyhawk Wars, located close to Rel Mord and the king's local bailiffs. Some have fled west into the County of Urnst. However, Hendrenn Halgood had the benefit of an unusual local ruler in Duke Arnon Orberend. While inhabitants for up to 30 miles looked relatively impoverished, this was a cover on the orders of the Duke to conceal that they were managing fairly well from outsiders and the local bailiff. The Duke used his own funds (including some raised by treasure hunting expeditions into the Rakers) to secretly return monies to heavily taxed farmers and other poorer folk using the bailiffs own lists and his own loyal militia. As a result the Duke was popular with his subjects. The city is unexceptional but more peaceful than many Nyrond cities of the time, and without beggars and vagrants.[1]

By Spring 585 CY the Royal Archmage Ghiselinn had moved to his birthplace in the city to live in a complex of towers and dungeons, and advise the Duke. He made apologies and excuses to King Archbold III for his absence from Rel Mord.[1]

As part of the administrative reforms by King Lynwerd in 590 CY, Orberend was made the provincial capital of the Duchy of Orberend under Duke Arnon Orberend.[2].

People

Population

In Spring 585 CY the city had a population of 13,250.[1] By 591 CY it had grown to 14,800.[2]

Demographics

The usual races of Nyrond would be expected to be found here, being humans (with an Oeridian dominance, and Suel present, as ethnic background), Olve (mainly sylvan with a small high elf presence), Halfling (stout), Dwarf, Gnome, half-elf and half-orc.[2]

Nyrond generally is lawful neutral in alignment, with lawful good, neutral good, chaotic good, and neutral also prevalent.[2]

Notable individuals

Notable individuals in or from Hendrenn Halgood include:

Religion

The common religions of Nyrond can be expected to be followed here, being Heironeous (the official state religion), Beory, Rao, Pelor, Zilchus, Norebo, Pholtus, Ralishaz, Boccob, Delleb, Celestian.[2]

The Duke of Orberend is a paladin of Pelor.[1]

Following the Greyhawk Wars superstitions and the worship of evil gods (including Hextor and Incabulos) began to grow as a sign of the despair of the common folk.[3]

Languages

The common languages of Nyrond can be expected to be spoken here, being Common, Nyrondese, Old Oeridian, Elven, and Halfling.[2]

Government

Orberend is located within the Kingdom of Nyrond.

In Spring 585 CY the Duke controlled the lands for about 30 miles around the city.[4]

In Spring 585 CY there was a local bailiff of the king stationed in the city, heavily taxing the locals.[1]

Following the reorganization of provincial administration under King Lynwerd I that commenced Needfest 1, 591 CY Orberend was part of the Duchy of Orberend.[1]

Military

A garrison of 150 of the king's soldiers is stationed here and are amenable to the duke. The duke also maintains a well-equipped and loyal militia.[1]

Heraldry

The Living Greyhawk campaign Triad for the Nyrond region created heraldry for the various provinces. From Anna B Meyer's website, Greyhawk Heraldry page

Economy

The city is located on a major trade road, and in a fertile area supporting grain and cloth production.[1]

In Living Greyhawk

In the Living Greyhawk campaign, Hendrenn Halgood featured in several adventures. It was also detailed in the "Nyrond Gazetteer" fan-created sourcebook. The organizing Triad for the Nyrond region created maps of Nyrond showing the borders of various provinces.[5]
