Tar Hill is a moderately-sized summit on Asperdi Isle in the Sea Baronies. The peak is 500ft tall, and from it seeps thick tar. In that tar are trapped bones of large, long extinct creatures, including dinosaurs. There are a number of old mineshafts that dot the area. These lead down to the Cauldron of Night. The area is guarded by 100 mercenaries hired by Basmajian, with his most trusted adjutant in charge.[1].
Geography
Tar Hill is on Asperd Isle, in the Sea Baron's territories. The hill is about three-quarters of the way north up the island, as far inland as it can be, given the size of the island, and fairly far from Asperdi or Ironport [2]
Resources
The hill is mined for the tar it produces, which makes Basmajian a good deal of money. This is, in turn, what he used to justify keeping troops there. The tar has adhesive and waterproofing properties, and when treated with ammonia, becomes as hard as steel.[2]
Rumors and legends
Because of all the bones found in the tar pits, mothers often tell their children that if they misbehave, huge creatures trapped in the tar will come eat them. There are also rumors about an entrance which lies 600 ft below ground, beyond old mineshafts infested with xorn, earth elementals, and worse. See Cauldron of Night for more details.
