The Suss Forest is a forest located on the western side of the Sea of Gearnat, to the south of the Welkwood between the elven kingdom of Celene, the County of Ulek, the Principality of Ulek, the Pomarj and the Wild Coast. The Suss is in general an unpleasant place, filled with thorn trees, brambles, briars, and thickets. The western end of the forest, where it grows upon the Lortmil Mountains is more open and clean, but from the eastern bank of the Jewel River it becomes more forboding and dark.[1] "The farther south one goes, the worse the forest becomes, until it is filled with an oppressive and evil atmosphere where it climbs the Drachensgrab Hills; something which the inhabitants of the Pomarj seem to enjoy. [2]
Features
Located within the Suss Forest are:
History
Humanoids (orcs and goblins) fleeing the Hateful Wars emerged from the Suss to invade the Pomarj in 513 CY.
Ecology
Flora and fauna
The Suss Forest tends towards massive, blackened, trees, said to move and whisper when interlopers move among them.[1] Among other notable trees, very old Hangman Trees are known in the eastern and southern portions of the wood.[3]
Inhabitants
The Knights of Luna from Celene station border companies in the Suss Forest.
After the Wild Coast was invaded and conquered by forces from the Pomarj, many of the displaced former residents became refugees and now live in the Suss.
The fell reputation of the Suss is well earned. The forest is home to hordes of humanoids – now vassals of Turrosh Mak, the despotic ruler of the Orcish Empire of the Pomarj. Even these savage creatures tread wearily in the Suss for more fearsome predators lurk in its thorn-choked tangles and noisome bogs. Hangman trees, huge assassin vines, and other carnivorous plants lie in wait for the unwary. The very trees of the forest, huge and blackened with age, seem to radiate malice towards any who dare to trespass beneath their boughs.
as well as more monstrous creatures:[4][1]
- Gibberlings
- Ettercaps
- Susserus
Additional inhabitants include[5]
The elves of the Welkwood say that an ancient bronze or brass dragon is rumored to lair somewhere in the northern Suss, and the dragon sleeps for as much as three to four decades at a time. When he awakens he begins a personal campaign against any goblinoids or other savage humanoids within his territory, and is a master tactician and a cheerful warrior who loves sneak attacks and silent raids.[6]
