Ratik is a nation in the northeastern Flanaess.

The Archbarony of Ratik is an independent feudal monarchy in the northeastern Flanaess. Ratik is small but prosperous, and is known for its snowy climate. Originally founded as a fiefdom of the former Great Kingdom, Ratik is now a completely independent state, allied with the Frost Barbarians in the Northern Alliance.

History
History
Ancient history
Long before Ratik was settled by its current human inhabitants, the realm's western foothills were inhabited by dwarves for thousands of years. The mountains are full of great dwarven stone citadels, serving to protect from great subterranean terrors.LGG
Circa -700 CY, human Flan tribes dominated this region. Some scholars believe that the land which is now Ratik may have been part of the empire of the archwizard Keraptis at this time.24
Founding
Ratik was originally founded as the Great Kingdom of Aerdy as a buffer territory to protect its northern reaches from the Suel barbarians.
In 109 CY, the Great Kingdom successfully defended its northernmost reaches from invasion by the Fruztii barbarians. Overking Manshen established the Bone March, which he gave as a fiefdom to the victorious Aerdi generals. The generals soon saw the need to protect their holdings by establishing an additional buffer zone to the north, and in 122 CY appointed veteran General Sir Pelgrave Ratik of Winetha to oversee the expansion of the Great Kingdom's borders as far north as the Griff Mountains.LGG
That winter, General Ratik pushed across the Kalmar Pass and captured the town of Bresht (now Ratikhill) from the Fruztii, then struck an alliance with the dwarves of the eastern Rakers which forced the Fruztii to retreat to the defensible Timberway Forest. Ratik wisely avoided following the Fruztii into an obvious ambush, but instead halted and established a fort  overlooking Grendep Bay at Onsager Point, which he called Marner.LGG
Over the following years, Marner grew from a military outpost into a small port city, establishing trade with the dwarves, including in gems and furs. The fort's location allowed him to secure the surrounding area, and its proximity to the Timberway allowed Ratik to establish as a center of shipbuilding.LGG
In spring of 128 CY, the Fruztii and Schnai allied to attack Marner in a surprise attack by sea. In a genius move, General Ratik set the port entrances ablaze, forcing the barbarian armada to approach by a narrow path where it was destroyed by the port's siege engines and navy. The Overking was sufficiently impressed with General Ratik that he granted him the title of Baron over the lands he had captured, with the town of Bresht renamed to Ratikhill in his honor.LGG
Development
Trade with Spinecastle led to an alliance between Ratik and the Bone March, and the two nations saw two centuries of peace and prosperity.LGG
In 356 CY, during the Great Kingdom's secession crisis with Nyrond, a unified force of the Fruztii and Schnai barbarians attacked the Great Kingdom. Overking Portillan was forced to abandon the defense of Nyrond to divert his troops to protect the northern border. The defense raised by the humans and dwarves of Ratik was legendary, and earned them the respect of the Frutzii.LGG
Growing independence
During the Turmoil Between Crowns (437-446 CY), Ratik gained semi-palatinate status as the Great Kingdom's authority over its furthest reaches waned. Baron Alain II of Ratik declared himself the title of Archbaron. Ratik allied with the Bone March against both the northern barbarians and the North Province of the Great Kingdom.LGG
In 560 CY, nonhuman tribes from the Rakers and Blemu Hills invaded the Bone March, killing its leaders and subjugating its populace in 563 CY. Ratik had time to prepare a defense, but received no support from Overking Ivid V and was not strong enough to defeat the invaders alone.LGG
In response, Archbaron Lexnol III of Ratik forged an alliance with the Frost Barbarians known as the Northern Alliance. The alliance made successful strikes against the Hold of StonefistLGGWoG via the Bluefang-Kelten Pass and the Bone March in the south in 575 CY. However, despite the resounding success of the latter actions, the humanoids would soon recover and continue their raids, including the settlements of the gnomes of the Lofthills west of the Loftwood.57
At some point after 576 CY, Ratik would effectively declare complete independence from the Great Kingdom, although it was already largely independent in practice by this point.LGGWoGWoG
Recent history
In 577 CY, Ratik suffered a serious shortage of manpower, primarily due to losses from continued fighting in the Bone March. Ratik was forced to recruit mercenaries and foreign volunteers, funded by the spoils of recent successful campaigns. The alliance with the Frost Barbarians allowed woodsmen and elven warders of the Timberway to be re-assigned to the Loftwood Forest along the southern border, while units of new recruits were formed known as the Volunteer Borderers.57
In 578 CY, Ratik won a major victory against the orcs of the Loftwood.LGG That summer saw the Battle of the Loftwood, in which the combined forces of Ratik managed to see off an invading force of 11,000 humanoids.57
In 579 CY, Lexnol III's only son Alain IV married Lady Evaleigh, daughter of the count of Knurl, the only surviving province of the Bone March. In 580 CY, agents of the Bone March stole the Seal of Marner in a plot to damage the alliance between Ratik and the Frost Barbarians, but it was later recovered.LGGWoG
In 582 CY, Ratik occupied the Loftwood to the south, leading an assault on Johnsport backed by a naval attack along the coast.
In 582 CY, Iuz the Old, disguised as the barbarian god Vatun, led an alliance of the Frost, Ice and Snow barbarians against the Hold of Stonefist, which would ultimately spark the Greyhawk Wars. The alliance was broken when Vatun ordered the invasion of Ratik; such respect the barbarians had for their alliance with Ratik that they abandoned their deific leader instead. When the Greyhawk Wars ended in 584 CY, Ratik was not a signatory to the Pact of Greyhawk.
In 586 CY, Alain IV led an army into the Bone March to retake Spinecastle, with the ultimate goal of unifying the Bone March and Ratik. The attack was a failure, and Alain was pulled from his horse by gnolls and slain. Baron Lexnol collapsed upon hearing the news, and was bedridden ever since. Lady Evaleigh assumed the throne in his stead.LGG
Alain's body was retained by the Black Moon Gnolls as a trophy for several years.148
In 590 CY, barbarian sailors hailing from Fireland arrived in port at Marner, seeking help with a dire problem facing their people.
In 591 CY, Ratik and Knurl suffer progressively stronger attacks by the demuhumans of the Bone March, and discovered spies and agents from numerous realms. Ratik seeks an alliance with the Snow Barbarians, but the Schnai do not respect Evaleigh as leader.LGG A growing lack of faith in Lady Evaleigh's leadership has led to tensions among her own lords and the powerful merchant guilds.4
By 593 CY, Lady Evaleigh all but disappears from public view, leaving the realm's defense to individual lords.20

Geography
Geography
Ratik is a small nation located in the northeastern Flanaess, nestled between the Solnor Ocean and the seemingly endless foothills of mountain range known as the Rakers. South of Ratik is the Bone March, another former fiefdom of the Great Kingdom. North of Ratik is the Timberway Forest, ownership of which is divided equallyLGG between Ratik and the lands of the Frost Barbarians to the north. To the southeast of Ratik is the Loftwood. These natural borders isolate Ratik from the rest of the Flanaess, but serve to protect it from invasion.LGG
Its capital of Marner is located in a short peninsula to in the realm's north. Marner is its only major port.LGG

People
People
Population and demographics
Population
In 591 CY, Ratik has a population of 138,500. Of those, 6,600 live in the capital of Marner, while 5,500 live in the major trade settlement of Ratikhill.LGG

Most inhabitants of Ratik are human (79%), primarily of Aerdi descent, many having both Oeridian and Suloise ancestry. Numerous Fruztii and Schnai of Sulose descent inhabit the realm as farmers. There are a few of Flan descent also. Humans live mainly in the coastal regions, where there are many fishing villages. Many refugees originally from the Bone March have settled in Ratik.LGG The humans of Ratik are characterized by outsiders as rugged highlanders, and are known for their alertness and readiness.148

After humans, the most common are dwarves (8%), with four-fifths mountain dwarves and the rest hill dwarves; halflings (6%), elves (2%), gnomes (2%), half-elves (1%) and half-orcs (1%). Dwarves and gnomes inhabit the mountains where mining for gold and gemstones is common.LGG

The people here are commonly of neutral alignments, typically N, NG*, CN, and CG.

The people of Ratik commonly wear furs, due to the cold weather and the cheap availability of furs.

The demonym for people from Ratik is Ratikkan,LGG, Ratikers,LGG or occasionally Ratikmen.148

Government
Ruler
Ratik has been ruled since 586 CY by Lady Evaleigh, daughter of Count Dunstan of Knurl and widow of Prince Alain IV, son of Archbaron Lexnol III. Evaleigh assumed the throne after Lexnol was stricken by palsy upon news of his son's death in the Bone March. She is a human rogue with some skill with arcane magic, and is chaotic good in alignment.LGG
The baroness is the ultimate ruler of Ratik, unlike some other monarchies of the Flanaess whose rulers have constitutionally limited power. Baroness Evaleigh, an outsider who married into the monarchy, is not trusted by the populace the as well as her predecessors were, and her lack of political decisiveness does little to impress the dwarf and gnome lords.LGG

Administrative divisions
Administrative divisions
Executive branch
Ratik is divided into fourteen freeholds, ruled by human and dwarven lords. These peers form the Council of Great Lords. The smaller cities and towns are administered by burghers. These lords and burgers advise the Baroness, although she is the ultimate ruler.LGG

Resources
One of Ratik's main resources comes from its long-standing claim to its part of the Timberway Forest, whose long-standing borders with the lands of the Frost Barbarians have only recently been formalized. Hunting in the forest provides valuable furs and pelts, while its timber, primarily strong pine wood, is used for shipbuilding at the port city of Marner, as well as an important trade good in its own right.LGG Wood here can be up to 20% cheaper than elsewhere the Flanaess.

Shipbuilding is major business in the port city of Marner. Blackdog's Frigate Infirmary grew during the Greyhawk Wars, and is now one of the biggest employers in the city.

Some farming is possible in the open lands between Marner and Ratikhill, but the good growing season is short. Coastal fishing villages are a major source of food in the region.LGG

Currency
Currency
Ratik mints a coinage based on the Aerdy standard, including the Orb (pp), crown (gp), scepter (ep), penny (sp), and common (cp).LGG
In much of Ratik, trade is often conducted in barter rather than coinage. In the Free City of Greyhawk, a higher premium is charged to exchange Ratik coinage.

Ratik has a storied military history. Its hardy men have historically been famed for their bravery and ferocity in battle.LGG However, continued conflict with the humanoids and political in-fighting among Ratik's nobility has undermined the military strength.1 Relatively low population limits Ratik's ability to raise sufficiently large armies to defeat its enemies.

The regular military includes men-at-arms, crossbowmen, and mounted armies. Conscription is mandatory, with both men and women receiving military training. Militias fielded include schiltrons of human spearmen and a small contingent of light cavalry. Woodsmen equipped with bows patrol the forest border to the north, while sling-equipped hillrunners keep watch at the southern borders. Dwarven and gnomish units are able to be called up in times of need.WoG

The leader of Ratik's forces bears the title of Marshal of the Archbarony. During the Battle of the Loftwood in 578 CY, Ratik's forces included a standing army of 2,225 infantry, 500 cavalry, four companies of foreign-recruited Volunteer Borderers numbering in total 900 men (with sufficient officers to recruit four more such companies), 4,000 levies and militia, 600 sylvan elves, and 3,000 gnomish allies. No dwarves could be recruited at that time, as they had to defend their mountain homes from gnolls and humanoids.57

By 585 CY, Ratik began fortifying its southern border with a series of castle keeps, near the foothills of the eastern spur of the Rakers.

In 591 CY, much of Ratik's military forces were stationed at the defensible walled city of Ratikhill.

In addition to a military controlled by the monarch, each of the Great Lords has the power to raise their own independent military force. House Bredivan commands a brave militia, while House Ulthek is served by the Order of the Hart.

Most of the Knight Protectors of the Great Kingdom now inhabit Ratik, following the fall of the Bone March.LGG The Knights of the Chase are also active in Ratik.13

Warriors of Ratik developed a polearm known as the angon, or battle spear. It is a polearm based on the spetum, with a shorter haft of 6-10 feet, and in Ratik has a crossbar mounted below a trefoil blade to keep enemies from advancing. Some have a serrated blade, while others are for-bladed. Some also have a spiked or bulbed buttcap, or are shod with metal along their entire length.A1998

The half-orc warrior Kurlotz operates an independent training hall six miles north of the border with the Bone March, located in an encampment around a small square tower.A1998

Relationships
Enemies
Ratik is enemy of the nonhuman tribes of the Rakers, who now control most of the Bone March.LGG

Ratik occasionally comes into conflict with the Snow Barbarians and Ice Barbarians, though at other times they have been allies.LGG

Ratik has a minor dispute with the Pale.LGG Its raids on the Bone March may lead to difficulties for the Pale and other nearby nations.

Ratik is an enemy to North Kingdom, who wishes to retake historic control of the region.LGG However, North Kingdom has historically been divided about attacking Ratik; while many ambitious lords support such an invasion, Overking Grenell has been ambivalent about it, and many ordinary folk greatly admire the bravery of Ratik's warriors, so much that some would even go to fight for Ratik's side.Ivid

Allies
Ratik is strongly allied with the Frost Barbarians in what is known as the Northern Alliance, established Lexnol III circa 563-575 CY to defend against the invading humanoid tribes. Nobles from Ratik have much influence among the courts of the Frost Barbarians.LGG The alliance is symbolically represnted by the Seal of the Alliance, a parchment endorsed and blessed by both the gods of the Fruztii and the people of Ratik, and the superstitious Fruztii place enormous symbolic importance in the Seal, taking it as a bad omen if it is able to be stolen.WoG

Ratik is allied with the city of Knurl, the last remaining uncaptured region in the Bone March. The dwarves and gnomes of the Flinty Hills and Rakers, enemy of the nonhuman tribes, also consider themselves allies of Ratik. Ratik considers itself an ally of Nyrond.LGG

In the Living Greyhawk organized Dungeons & Dragons campaign, the region of Ratik was assigned to Hawaii. Matt Lau originally served as the region's point of contact. From 2003 onward, Ratik was part of Metaregion IV, "Nyrond and Environs", incorporating Nyrond, the County of Urnst, the Duchy of Urnst, and the Theocracy of the Pale. Ratik had a website at

Ratik's plotline focused on the ongoing warfare with the humanoids of the Bone March, and Lady Evaleigh's lack of leadership leading to internal conflict between noble houses, merchant's guilds, and those loyal to the Archbaroness.

On December 3, 2003, the Ratik region was retired. Hawaii was folded into Nyrond, and all Ratik PCs became citizens of Nyrond as of February 1, 2004. In October 2006, Ratik became available for play. Its new region covered part of Australia (Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Tasmania, Victoria), Japan, part of New Zealand (South Island), and Hawaii. A new website was established at http://ratik.rpga-apac.com. James Dempsey took over as primary contact.

History

Ancient history

Long before Ratik was settled by its current human inhabitants, the realm's western foothills were inhabited by dwarves for thousands of years. The mountains are full of great dwarven stone citadels, serving to protect from great subterranean terrors.[1]

Circa -700 CY, human Flan tribes dominated this region. Some scholars believe that the land which is now Ratik may have been part of the empire of the archwizard Keraptis at this time.[2]

The generals soon saw the need to protect their holdings by establishing an additional buffer zone to the north, and in 122 CY appointed veteran General Sir Pelgrave Ratik of Winetha to oversee the expansion of the Great Kingdom's borders as far north as the Griff Mountains.[1]

That winter, General Ratik pushed across the Kalmar Pass and captured the town of Bresht (now Ratikhill) from the Fruztii, then struck an alliance with the dwarves of the eastern Rakers which forced the Fruztii to retreat to the defensible Timberway Forest. Ratik wisely avoided following the Fruztii into an obvious ambush, but instead halted and established a fort overlooking Grendep Bay at Onsager Point, which he called Marner.[1]

Over the following years, Marner grew from a military outpost into a small port city, establishing trade with the dwarves, including in gems and furs. The fort's location allowed him to secure the surrounding area, and its proximity to the Timberway allowed Ratik to establish as a center of shipbuilding.[1]

The Overking was sufficiently impressed with General Ratik that he granted him the title of Baron over the lands he had captured, with the town of Bresht renamed to Ratikhill in his honor.[1]

Development

Trade with Spinecastle led to an alliance between Ratik and the Bone March, and the two nations saw two centuries of peace and prosperity.[1]

In 356 CY, during the Great Kingdom's secession crisis with Nyrond, a unified force of the Fruztii and Schnai barbarians attacked the Great Kingdom. Overking Portillan was forced to abandon the defense of Nyrond to divert his troops to protect the northern border. The defense raised by the humans and dwarves of Ratik was legendary, and earned them the respect of the Frutzii.[1]

Growing independence

During the Turmoil Between Crowns (437-446 CY), Ratik gained semi-palatinate status as the Great Kingdom's authority over its furthest reaches waned. Baron Alain II of Ratik declared himself the title of Archbaron. Ratik allied with the Bone March against both the northern barbarians and the North Province of the Great Kingdom.[1]

In 560 CY, nonhuman tribes from the Rakers and Blemu Hills invaded the Bone March, killing its leaders and subjugating its populace in 563 CY. Ratik had time to prepare a defense, but received no support from Overking Ivid V and was not strong enough to defeat the invaders alone.[1]

In response, Archbaron Lexnol III of Ratik forged an alliance with the Frost Barbarians known as the Northern Alliance. The alliance made successful strikes against the Hold of Stonefist[1][3] via the Bluefang-Kelten Pass and the Bone March in the south in 575 CY. However, despite the resounding success of the latter actions, the humanoids would soon recover and continue their raids, including the settlements of the gnomes of the Lofthills west of the Loftwood.[4]

At some point after 576 CY, Ratik would effectively declare complete independence from the Great Kingdom, although it was already largely independent in practice by this point.[1][5][6]

Recent history

In 577 CY, Ratik suffered a serious shortage of manpower, primarily due to losses from continued fighting in the Bone March. Ratik was forced to recruit mercenaries and foreign volunteers, funded by the spoils of recent successful campaigns. The alliance with the Frost Barbarians allowed woodsmen and elven warders of the Timberway to be re-assigned to the Loftwood Forest along the southern border, while units of new recruits were formed known as the Volunteer Borderers.[4]

In 578 CY, Ratik won a major victory against the orcs of the Loftwood.[7] That summer saw the Battle of the Loftwood, in which the combined forces of Ratik managed to see off an invading force of 11,000 humanoids.[4]

In 579 CY, Lexnol III's only son Alain IV married Lady Evaleigh, daughter of the count of Knurl, the only surviving province of the Bone March. In 580 CY, agents of the Bone March stole the Seal of Marner in a plot to damage the alliance between Ratik and the Frost Barbarians, but it was later recovered.[1][6]

In 582 CY, Ratik occupied the Loftwood to the south, leading an assault on Johnsport backed by a naval attack along the coast.[8]

In 582 CY, Iuz the Old, disguised as the barbarian god Vatun, led an alliance of the Frost, Ice and Snow barbarians against the Hold of Stonefist, which would ultimately spark the Greyhawk Wars. The alliance was broken when Vatun ordered the invasion of Ratik; such respect the barbarians had for their alliance with Ratik that they abandoned their deific leader instead.[9] When the Greyhawk Wars ended in 584 CY, Ratik was not a signatory to the Pact of Greyhawk.[10]

Lady Evaleigh assumed the throne in his stead.[1] Alain's body was retained by the Black Moon Gnolls as a trophy for several years.[11]

In 590 CY, barbarian sailors hailing from Fireland arrived in port at Marner, seeking help with a dire problem facing their people.[12]

In 591 CY, Ratik and Knurl suffer progressively stronger attacks by the demuhumans of the Bone March, and discovered spies and agents from numerous realms. Ratik seeks an alliance with the Snow Barbarians, but the Schnai do not respect Evaleigh as leader.[1] A growing lack of faith in Lady Evaleigh's leadership has led to tensions among her own lords and the powerful merchant guilds.[13]

By 593 CY, Lady Evaleigh all but disappears from public view, leaving the realm's defense to individual lords.[14]

Geography

Ratik is a small nation located in the northeastern Flanaess, nestled between the Solnor Ocean and the seemingly endless foothills of mountain range known as the Rakers. South of Ratik is the Bone March, another former fiefdom of the Great Kingdom. North of Ratik is the Timberway Forest, ownership of which is divided equally[15] between Ratik and the lands of the Frost Barbarians to the north. To the southeast of Ratik is the Loftwood. These natural borders isolate Ratik from the rest of the Flanaess, but serve to protect it from invasion.[1]

Its capital of Marner is located in a short peninsula to in the realm's north. Marner is its only major port.[1]

People

Population and demographics

In 591 CY, Ratik has a population of 138,500. Of those, 6,600 live in the capital of Marner, while 5,500 live in the major trade settlement of Ratikhill.[1]

Many refugees originally from the Bone March have settled in Ratik.[1] The humans of Ratik are characterized by outsiders as rugged highlanders, and are known for their alertness and readiness.[11]

After humans, the most common are dwarves (8%), with four-fifths mountain dwarves and the rest hill dwarves; halflings (6%), elves (2%), gnomes (2%), half-elves (1%) and half-orcs (1%). Dwarves and gnomes inhabit the mountains where mining for gold and gemstones is common.[1]

The people here are commonly of neutral alignments, typically N, NG*, CN, and CG.

The people of Ratik commonly wear furs, due to the cold weather and the cheap availability of furs.

The demonym for people from Ratik is Ratikkan,[16], Ratikers,[17] or occasionally Ratikmen.[11]

Religion

The major religions in Ratik are the worship of Procan, Xerbo, Kord, Norebo, Trithereon, Phyton, and the Oeridian agricultural gods.

Languages

The languages spoken in Ratik are Common, Old Oeridian, Dwarven, and the Cold Tongue.

Government

She is a human rogue with some skill with arcane magic, and is chaotic good in alignment.[1]

The baroness is the ultimate ruler of Ratik, unlike some other monarchies of the Flanaess whose rulers have constitutionally limited power. Baroness Evaleigh, an outsider who married into the monarchy, is not trusted by the populace the as well as her predecessors were, and her lack of political decisiveness does little to impress the dwarf and gnome lords.[1]

Administrative divisions

Ratik is divided into fourteen freeholds, ruled by human and dwarven lords. These peers form the Council of Great Lords. The smaller cities and towns are administered by burghers. These lords and burgers advise the Baroness, although she is the ultimate ruler.[1]

Among the notable Ratikkan nobility are House Bredivan and House Ulthek.[22]

Heraldry

Economy

Resources

One of Ratik's main resources comes from its long-standing claim to its part of the Timberway Forest, whose long-standing borders with the lands of the Frost Barbarians have only recently been formalized. Hunting in the forest provides valuable furs and pelts, while its timber, primarily strong pine wood, is used for shipbuilding at the port city of Marner, as well as an important trade good in its own right.[1][23] Wood here can be up to 20% cheaper than elsewhere the Flanaess.[20]

Shipbuilding is major business in the port city of Marner. Blackdog's Frigate Infirmary grew during the Greyhawk Wars, and is now one of the biggest employers in the city. [20]

Mining in the hills and mountains, inhabited by dwarves and gnomes, are a source of gold and fine gemstones of great value.[1] Ratik is a major supplier of gold used across the Flanaess.[20]

Some farming is possible in the open lands between Marner and Ratikhill, but the good growing season is short. Coastal fishing villages are a major source of food in the region.[1]

Currency

Ratik mints a coinage based on the Aerdy standard, including the Orb (pp), crown (gp), scepter (ep), penny (sp), and common (cp).[1]

In much of Ratik, trade is often conducted in barter rather than coinage.[24] In the Free City of Greyhawk, a higher premium is charged to exchange Ratik coinage.[25]

Transportation

Marner is the only major sea port in Ratik. It is well defended.

Trade is conducted by water via the Aerdi Sea and the Bay of Gates.[26] Trade is even conducted with Spinecastle.[11]

Brigands and merchants are occasionally encountered on the roads.[27]

Military

Ratik has a storied military history. Its hardy men have historically been famed for their bravery and ferocity in battle.[1] However, continued conflict with the humanoids and political in-fighting among Ratik's nobility has undermined the military strength.[28] Relatively low population limits Ratik's ability to raise sufficiently large armies to defeat its enemies.[23]

Dwarven and gnomish units are able to be called up in times of need.[5][23]

No dwarves could be recruited at that time, as they had to defend their mountain homes from gnolls and humanoids.[4]

By 585 CY, Ratik began fortifying its southern border with a series of castle keeps, near the foothills of the eastern spur of the Rakers. [29]

In 591 CY, much of Ratik's military forces were stationed at the defensible walled city of Ratikhill.[30]

In addition to a military controlled by the monarch, each of the Great Lords has the power to raise their own independent military force. House Bredivan commands a brave militia, while House Ulthek is served by the Order of the Hart.[22]

Most of the Knight Protectors of the Great Kingdom now inhabit Ratik, following the fall of the Bone March.[31] The Knights of the Chase are also active in Ratik.[32]

Some also have a spiked or bulbed buttcap, or are shod with metal along their entire length.[33]

The half-orc warrior Kurlotz operates an independent training hall six miles north of the border with the Bone March, located in an encampment around a small square tower.[34]

Relationships

Enemies

Ratik is enemy of the nonhuman tribes of the Rakers, who now control most of the Bone March.[1]

Ratik occasionally comes into conflict with the Snow Barbarians and Ice Barbarians, though at other times they have been allies.[35]

Ratik has a minor dispute with the Pale.[1] Its raids on the Bone March may lead to difficulties for the Pale and other nearby nations.[8]

Ratik is an enemy to North Kingdom, who wishes to retake historic control of the region.[1][36] However, North Kingdom has historically been divided about attacking Ratik; while many ambitious lords support such an invasion, Overking Grenell has been ambivalent about it, and many ordinary folk greatly admire the bravery of Ratik's warriors, so much that some would even go to fight for Ratik's side.[37]

Allies

Ratik is strongly allied with the Frost Barbarians in what is known as the Northern Alliance, established Lexnol III circa 563-575 CY to defend against the invading humanoid tribes. Nobles from Ratik have much influence among the courts of the Frost Barbarians.[38] The alliance is symbolically represnted by the Seal of the Alliance, a parchment endorsed and blessed by both the gods of the Fruztii and the people of Ratik, and the superstitious Fruztii place enormous symbolic importance in the Seal, taking it as a bad omen if it is able to be stolen.[6]

Ratik is allied with the city of Knurl, the last remaining uncaptured region in the Bone March. The dwarves and gnomes of the Flinty Hills and Rakers, enemy of the nonhuman tribes, also consider themselves allies of Ratik. Ratik considers itself an ally of Nyrond.[1]

In Living Greyhawk

In the Living Greyhawk organized Dungeons & Dragons campaign, the region of Ratik was assigned to Hawaii. Matt Lau originally served as the region's point of contact. From 2003 onward, Ratik was part of Metaregion IV, "Nyrond and Environs", incorporating Nyrond, the County of Urnst, the Duchy of Urnst, and the Theocracy of the Pale. Ratik had a website at http://geocities.com/ratik_triad.

Ratik's plotline focused on the ongoing warfare with the humanoids of the Bone March, and Lady Evaleigh's lack of leadership leading to internal conflict between noble houses, merchant's guilds, and those loyal to the Archbaroness.

On December 3, 2003, the Ratik region was retired.[39] Hawaii was folded into Nyrond, and all Ratik PCs became citizens of Nyrond as of February 1, 2004. Some unpublished adventures were released on the triad website.

The new regional boundaries officially went live on October 5, 2006.[40][41]

On October 4, 2007, New South Wales returned to Perrenland.[42][43]

Living Greyhawk play continued in Ratik until 2008 with the year 598 CY, when the Living Greyhawk campaign ended.[42] All Ratik scenarios were retired after 31 December 2008.

At least 78 players registered their characters on the 2006-2008 Ratik triad website, playing 157 characters ranging from level 1 to 13.[44]
