Hepmonaland is a continent to the southeast of the Flanaess. Hepmonaland is the Suel and Oeridian name for the land, named after Eri-hep-Mona[1], the first Suloise explorer to arrive there. The Olman call it Xamolatatl, "Home of the People", and the Touv call it Melavi, "The Bountiful Place".[2] It is the smallest of Oerth's continents.

Description

History

  • c.-7408 CY the Torhoon Empire was centered in Hepmonaland. [3]
  • A "bat-like humanoid"[4] civilization is abandoned or destroyed several hundred years before the Touv and Olman rise to prominence.[5]
  • c.-1900 CY the Olman and Touv peoples started to spread across Hepmonaland [5]
  • c.-1900 to -1500 CY, the Touv begin to form permanent settlements in the south, without warring with other tribes, discover "advanced metalworking skills", and Onatal joins tribes together into the Kingdom of Kunda and becomes King of the Cities.[5]
    • Kunda expands and eventually come into contact with the Olman of the north.
    • Kunda declares war on the Olman, "repulsed by the Olman use of human sacrifice and their worship of Meyanok."[5]
  • c.-1200 CY Olman begun to emigrate from Hepmonaland to the Amedio Jungle. By about -1100 CY the Amedio Olman city states declared independence from the Hepmonaland Olman empire, and by -1050 CY the Amedio Olman Empire had formed.[6] In about -1000 CY there was a great migration of the Olman people out of Hepmonaland.[7]
  • By c.-700 CY most of the Olman had been pushed out of Hepmonaland by the Touv.[7]
  • Following the Twin Cataclysms in -422 CY, at the end of the Baklunish-Suloise Wars, the Great Migrations resulted in the Suel arriving in Hepmonaland from the north across the Tilva Strait, and in -415 CY one of the first Suel cities was founded in Hepmonaland.[8]

Geography

Hepmonaland is bounded by the Densac Gulf and Vogan Sea to the west, the Solnor Ocean and Sea of Sharks to the east, the Tilva Strait to the northwest, and the Oljatt Sea to the northeast. A spur of islands splits off from the continents western shore, curving north to form Xuxchan Bay. A large island, the Isle of Singing Stones lies to the southwest.

Throughout the continent are various jungles, rainforest, mountains and hills, wetlands, and numerous rivers and other bodies of water. An unhealthy tropical marsh, the Pelisso Swamp, sits along much of the continent's northeastern coast, nearest the Tilvanot Peninsula.
The whole northern half of the continent is covered in jungle. Most of the southern third of the continent is encompassed by the Kabrevo Plain, a dry, grassy savannah filled with different varieties of grasses and scrub trees and bushes depending on the area of the plains.

Hepmonaland is roughly 2.7 million mi2 in area;[9] making it approximately 25% the size of Africa.

Climate

Hepmonaland is a tropical landmass, suffering frequent storms.

Flora

Many of the plants common to the southern tropical Flanaess can be found in Hepmonaland. Banyan, baobab, deklo, mahogany and palm are common sights on the jungle continent, usually intermixed with plants unique to the region. Many unusual and dangerous plants are relatively common here, such as choke creepers, giant sundews, hangman trees (in a jungle variant of the temperate plant), mantraps, shambling mounds and thomslingers.
Some plants unique to Hepmonaland include: Akat, Bato, Goni, Jev, Kola, Miro, Pok, and Xantla.

Fauna

A wide variety of creatures live in Hepmonaland, with most somewhat familiar to the people of the Flanaess. Giant insects are common in the northern lands, and snakes of all sorts inhabit the jungles. Herbivorous quadrupeds can be found everywhere; apes (gorillas), rhinos, onco and elephants round out the list of grazers. Great cats, hyenas, and giant reptiles feed on the herbivores, as do several types of humanoids. Some of the odder creatures live in the southlands, but these are confined to small regions.
