Nil Keep is a castle in the Duchy of Urnst.[1]

Description

Nil Keep, known as Hope's End by commoners or the Fortress when it was first built by Mordayl Maure, is headquarters of the Western Abbor-Alz March and is considered a bleak outpost for undesirables. Despite its grim reputation, the four military units stationed there are well-trained under March Warden Lord Commander Brondal Kruske, staying battle-ready due to constant threats.

The forces consist of "two units of infantry [one being Porg's Pikes, specialists in reach weapons], a unit of archers, and newly formed light cavalry. ... In addition, the Warders of the Border Marches provide intelligence on regional threats, including humanoids, giants, wyverns, hill tribes, and Rary’s forces."[2]

Geography

Nil Keep is located in the Abbor-Alz, along the Knife's Edge Pass near the headwaters of the Soltara River.[3]

History

Mordayl Maure, a tyrant and powerful mage warrior, who had the corpses of dead workers built into the walls when it was constructed centuries ago.[4] His body on entombed there after his assassination until 593 CY when he returned as a gravehaunt and was permantently put to rest.[5]

"In 595 CY, Nil Keep was destroyed in a massive conflagration that left only rubble in its place. Dedicated efforts at rebuilding have produced a rough fort to make do until such time as a new fortress is finished. The destruction of the old fortress has done little to erase the old nickname for the place."[2]

Military Units

  • 2nd infantry
  • 25th archers
  • 33rd heavy infantry (Porg's Pikes)
  • 47th scouts (Warders of the Border Marches)
  • newly formed light cavalry (Does not have a designation in 597 CY)

Economy

Uses the duchy's standard coinage consisting of the platinum sterling duke (pp), gold duke (gp), electrum bright (ep), silver shield (sp), and copper common (cp).[6]
