In the very beginning, when [[Dungeon]] #124 came out with the first [[Age of Worms]] adventure, the magazine said one could download the PDF "today". Afterword, however, the reception of the PDF was overwhelmingly positive, most notably the stat blocks for NPCs in the town.  The rumors were also said to be integral to the campaign, as well, and the full page of plot hooks to start the party in the campaign were celebrated as being exceedingly valuable to a DM.

The Age of Worms Overload is a highly acclaimed 29-page document released online by Paizo Publishing to support the Age of Worms adventure path.

Description

The free online document contains "material [they] just couldn’t fit in the magazine, but which [they] still wanted to share to enrich [the] Age of Worms campaign.[1]. It is a large glut of information, including elements such as plot summaries, NPC statistics, rumors in town, and information about the lands surrounding the small village of Diamond Lake where the series began.

Publication History

Shortly after the PDF document was publicly released, Erik Mona said he was "already committed to releasing updated versions of the Overload file as more and more conversion appendices become available", but, in the end, the original outline and plot summaries ended up being accurate enough to not need chronology issue changed or other minor issues corrected. Even without updates, the file continues to be available online, and is still downloaded frequently.

Reception

In the introduction to The Whispering Cairn (Dragon #124), author and Editor-in-Chief, Erik Mona, hinted at "updates and previews" that would be coming, and said the first would be in Dungeon #125 (Aug 2005).[2] When that issue came out, it instead mentioned that an entire PDF was available, the magazine said one could download the PDF "today". There was some grumbling that it was not available for just over six weeks (August 5, 2005).[3]

Erik Mona quickly admitted on the forums that "Basically, I bit off more than I could chew with this Overload thing, and did not account for things like finishing the Shackled City book and Origins in my original estimate of how long it would take to complete."[4] Creative Director James Jacobs said, "We're well aware of the fact that we're way late getting the Age of Worms Overload material up online. Promising it in print was probably a mistake. It'll be up online as soon as we can make it happen. …. The only real mistake we made was indicating that the material existed before it was ready to see the light of the day." [5]

The Age of Worms Overload was awarded the 2006 ENnie for Best Free Product—Gold Winner [6]

The file continues to be popular with DMs who still run the adventure path in both Pathfinder RPG and Dungeons & Dragons games set in Greyhawk.
