The College of Sages and Sorcery is an academic institution in the Duchy of Urnst which specializes in the tutelage of arcane arts.
Description
History
In the era of the First Dukes, the days before the decline of the Great Kingdom, the grateful Duchess Beatrude Urlirel granted a permanent lease to lands on the wooded hills south of Nellix to the fellowship of wizards who had aided her in the construction of Castle Shorewatch. These wizards founded an institution dedicated to the preservation of the magic and history of the Suel of the Maure Compact. Other colleges would emulate their example in the centuries to come, but the College of Sages and Sorcery remains the preeminent institution of arcane and historical study in the Duchy of Urnst.[1]
Members
Students seeking admission to the College of Sages and Sorcery must be able to cast arcane spells. A new student is admitted to the College with the status of Probationer and must advance to the status of Sophist within one calendar year of joining. Those who fail to advance are considered unsuited for further study at the College.
Structure
Student rankings
- Probationer
- The lowest rank in the College of Sages and Sorcery. They must pass the Sophist examination within one year or leave. During this time, they are expected to master Draconic and advance in arcane and academic studies.
- Sophist
- Sophists are long-term students at the College, with up to four years to advance to Querist or leave. They are expected to master arcane spell preparation and deepen their knowledge in all areas of study.
- Querist
- Querists are advanced students, often reaching their highest rank at this stage. They may study for up to five more years before being gently informed the College has no more to teach them. Querists who leave are considered alumni and may return later if they pass the Fellow examinations.
- Fellow
- Fellows are graduate students at the College, responsible for teaching and advancing magical research while reporting to Preceptors and Academians. They may stay indefinitely but face high dues and significant time commitments.
Instructor Rankings
- Preceptor (teacher)
- Preceptors are the elite of the College, focused on advanced magical and historical studies while students and Fellows handle menial tasks. They contribute time and finances to the College but enjoy significant perks and may stay as long as they wish.
- Academian (senior instructor)
- Academian is an honorary title for outstanding Preceptors at the College. They dedicate significant time to advancing the College, enjoy notable perks, and may remain indefinitely.
- Director (administrator)
- The College of Sages and Sorcery is governed by fifteen Directors selected from the Academians. They elect one member as the Speaker, an honorary role.
Leaving the College
- Expulsion
- Members who violate the College's Rules of Conduct are expelled permanently and cannot rejoin.
- Former Students
- Probationers have one year to pass their Sophist exams, and Sophists have four years to pass their Querist exams. Failure results in expulsion, with no chance of rejoining the College.
- Alumni
- Querists or Fellows who leave the College voluntarily become Alumni, retaining access to facilities (for a fee) and the option to return for future studies.
- Emeriti
- Preceptors or Academians who leave voluntarily are granted the title of Emeritus, retaining access to facilities and the option to return for research.
Areas of Study
- Major Fields
- The College of Sages and Sorcery has members who specialize in various fields, includeing spellcraft, as well as individual fields of study like arcana, history, the plane, and local topics.
- Minor Fields

Notably, Warnes Starcoat gave a lecture here in 590 CY on the dangers of the Nyr Dyv and spellcasting in aquatic environments.[20]

- Justinian Hall (Hall of Natural Philosophy)—The administrative center of the College, where new students register, pay fees, and are assigned mentors. It also houses the larger non-arcane library, containing works on history, science, philosophy (including rare books on Skepticism), and religion (mainly about Wee Jas and Boccob).[20]

A handful of Apporters are stationed in each of the major cities.[21]
- Cities include Leukish, Nellix, Seltaren
