Bat-folk are a mysterious race from the ancient past in Hepmonaland, traces of whom have been found in ruined cities, temples, or items there.[1]

Description

"Bat-Folk of Hepmonaland. Separated from Eastern Oerik by the Tilva Strait, Hepmonaland is a relatively small continent that few people of the Flanaess known much about. Those who have explored the north spur of Hepmonaland report dense rainforests, severe tropical storms, steamy wetlands, and a fetid swamp (called the Pelisso Swamp). Adventurers are sometimes lured into Hepmonaland’s rainforests by ancient ruins, including tombs and shrines left behind by an ancient civilization of bat-like humanoids whose history is largely forgotten."[2]

There is also a race of bat-folk in the Amedio Jungle who are different from the bat-folk of Hepmonaland. These people are more akin to lycanthropes and are the result of a curse from Camazotz which continued hereditarily. They are found in Telaneteculi.

History and society

Little is known of the bat-folk, other than that their civilization was abandoned or destroyed several hundred years before the Touv and Olman rose to prominence in Hepmonaland.[3] Their culture emphasized Good, and they were not unusually inclined toward Evil.[4]

They are variously referred to as "bat-people", "bat-men", and "bat-numanoids".

  • Lake Ichine—"remains of a bat-people city press up through the tar on the southern end of the lake"[5]
  • Lake Opotleotle—"Dark shapes fly above the lake at night, returning to roost in a ruin on the southern shore, rumored to be an abandoned bat-humanoid temple."[5]
  • Tchlapec Lake—"One of the noble [yuan-ti] houses ... explores the depths of the lake, occasionally turning up strange items from the vanished bat-people."[6]
  • Xaro mountains—"the forgotten city of Xuxulieto built in a rift in one of the mountains. ... there are some signs that the bat-men spent some time there."[6] "The lair of large, intelligent humanoid bats. .. when the city was alive and prosperous. The bat-people are good creatures."[4]

"It is possible that Camazotz gained popularity (or notoriety) due to the ancient bat-people who used to live in Hepmonaland."[7]

Rumors and legends

For all practical purposes, everything known about the bat-folk are rumors and legends, other than the fact that they existed.
