Llerg is the Suel god of Beasts and Strength. Among the savage Suel tribes of the Amedio Jungle and Hepmonaland, he is known as Hlerg. His symbols are representations of a bear, a snake, or an alligator.

Description

Llerg is depicted "a strong, shaggy man wearing furs and a fighting girdle or as a great bear, snake, or alligator. These animals are sacred to him, and they are his three holy symbols. He fights with a broadsword or in one of his animal forms and may be the ancestor of the original dire bears, dire alligators, and giant snakes."[5]

Relationships

Llerg is an ally of Vatun, has a friendly rivalry with Kord, and is an enemy of Telchur. Both Hextor and Heironeous bare enmity towards Llerg.[6] As a general rule, Llerg "ignores most other gods, seeing them as too civilized."[5]

Realm

Llerg's realm in Limbo is called Beasthaven.

Dogma

Llerg espouses a belief system largely centered on the emulation of predators in the animal world, that strength and ferocity are at the integral to what makes one worthy of respect, and that people have lost their closeness to that nature.[5][7]

Worshipers

The berserkers amongst the Cruski who pay him homage are known to be particularly fierce fearless and animalistic.[8]

Clergy

Llerg is served by clerics and druids, who often wear bear, alligator, or snake skins for religious ceremonies. He is the second most worshipped deity in the barbarian states after Kord. Upon reaching fifth level his clergy must defeat a bear in single combat in order to advance further. His clergy is not attacked by animals summoned or otherwise unless attacked first, and the preservation of predatory animals is the primary concern for druids in his service.[9] His clergy often act as intermediaries between tribes, aid in hunting in times of scarcity and train young warriors in both armed and unarmed combat.[5] The favored weapons of his clergy are battleaxes[2][5] and longsword,[5] though Llerg personally wields a broadsword.[1]

Tempales

Llerg has a temple in Hesuel Ilshar.[10]

Holy days and observances

The first snowfall of winter is a day of prayer and putting to rest the spirit of animals until the world renews itself. For regions without snow, this is celebrated on Sunsebb 1. This ritual consists of storing food, praying over animal skins, and feats of strength like rock lifting and axe throwing.

The first appearance of large predators after winter is a day of celebration, when priests spend all morning in prayer and then dance and wrestle in the firelight at night.[11]

Creative origins

Len Lakofka, who created the Suel pantheon for Dragon magazine, originally intended to name this deity Grell. However, as the name clashed with the name of an existing monster, he was renamed Llerg.[citation needed]
