"Evil Unearthed" is an adventure appearing in Dungeon #82 (September/October, 2000). The adventure was written by Ed Stark, and appeared in Dungeon's first issue supporting the third edition rules. The adventure also contains suggestions for linking it to "Playing with Fire" another adventure in the same issue.
Setting
The introduction of "Evil Unearthed" states that it is "set the Greyhawk campaign setting".[1] It takes place in and around the previously unnamed "unremarkable hamlet" of Brookhollow, on the Slipper River. Other important locations in the adventure include a nearby forest known as the Gnollwood, a barren region named the Waste, and Castle Overlook, a ruined fortress. These are all small, local names/locations, and thus do not appear on other, arger maps—as is typical for hamlets. No information is given regarding where Brookhollow and other adventure elements are situated in the Flanaess. According to Creative Director Ed Stark, this was an intentional design choice to tie it to and place it in Greyhawk, but without a specific location.
"Evil Unearthed does not really have a specific location in GH... That said, I always imagined it somewhere in or near the Grand Duchy of Urnst, or in the County, perhaps up near the Bandit Kingdoms. ...adventures tended to [be set] there all the time and it seemed appropriate."
—Ed Stark, via email interview[2] (25 Nov 2019)
Evil Unearthed contains story elements which relate to Heironeous and Hextor, which are common deities in third edition.[3] At the time, the World of Greyhawk was considered the "core world",[4] as were these deities.[5]
Castle Overlook
The use of the name "Castle Overlook" for the ruins in the adventure lends to a possible site for this adventure to be located. That name is also used to refer to the citadel at Pellak,[6] the capital of Bissel, which obviously is not in ruins, at all. The capitol is also referred to other official sources as "Castle Oversight".[7][8] It is unknown if the ruined castle in this adventure was rebuilt as were many others c.591 CY,[note 1] or if a new castle was given the name of its predecessor.
In Living Greyhawk
| This section contains content from the Living Greyhawk organized-play campaign. |
In the Living Greyhawk campaign, a town called Brookhollow was unintentionally placed just as Stark described—just southeast of Radigast City in the County of Urnst within about 50 miles of the border with the Bandit Kingdoms. It is unclear whether the organizers of Living Greyhawk campaign intended this to be the same place.
The LG location was used by Anna Meyer on her third-party composite map of the Flanaess.
