History
Combined Nyrondel-Almorian forces moved into the lower Bone March and captured Knurl in about 575 CY. This, along with incursions by humanoids across the Teesar Torrent into the North Province, led to a punitive force of mercenaries being dispatched in retaliation. However, the force was defeated in the hills above Belport, leading to then Herzog Grenell of the North Province to seek Imperial funding of a large army to recapture the southern Bone March.[4]
In 576 CY the boundaries of the North Province extended from the Blemu Hills to the Solnor Ocean coast, and south to the Adri Forest and well below the Trask River. The provincial capital was in Eastfair. At that time Grenell held the title "His Radiant Grace Grenell, the Herzog of the North Province".[4]
After Ivid V was assassinated then reanimated, the massacres that ensued in the Great Kingdom caused Nyrond to launch counterattacks against the Army of the North between Womtham and Innspa which lacked support due to the political chaos. Grenell rebelled against the Overking to try to stop Nyrond. Grenell and the orcs of the Bone March halted the Nyrondese armies in the Flinty Hills, callously sacrificing human and orcish troops to grind Nyrond's advance to a halt. Although he could advance no further against the combined armies, tantalized by the prospect of ultimate victory Archbold refused to break off his assault. Meanwhile, the South Province also seceded, and the Great Kingdom fragmented.[9]

In the first edition World of Greyhawk Fantasy Game Setting Glossography Grenell was detailed as a 15th level assassin.[6]
However, assassins were no longer a class in second edition, and so in the Ivid the Undying book Grenell became an 18th level cleric.[3]
In the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer under third edition rules, although assassins had returned as an available class, Grenell remained a cleric (now 19th level).[2]
