The Schley map from the Dungeon Master's Guide (2024) divided up into the common regions referred to in official material.[1][2]

The Flanaess (pronounced fla-NES[3] or alternately, flah-nay-ess or flay-nayz)[4] is the eastern part of the continent of Oerik, one of the four continents of Oerth,k and is sometimes simply called Eastern Oerik. It takes its name from the Flan people, who are the original settlers and native inhabitants of the (sub-)continent. The name simply means "land of the Flan."[4]

As well as being home of demihuman and humanoid races, it is also inhabited by the Flan, Oeridian, Baklunish, Suloise, Rhennee, Olman, and Touv subspecies of humanity.

Geography

The Flanaess can be broken down geographically as follows:

Sheldomar Valley or "Old Keoland"

Southwest; including nations such as : Keoland, the Ulek States, Geoff, Sterich, Yeomanry, and Bissel.
"The fertile Sheldomar Valley features two great rivers, the Sheldomar River and the Javan River, running between the Crystalmists and Lortmil Mountains until it reaches the Azure Sea. The climate is warm and mild, and many elves, dwarves, gnomes, and halflings live peacefully with Suel, Oeridian, and Flan farmers and lords."[5]

Central Flanaess

Western Nyr Dyv or "Old Ferrond"
Includes nations such as: the Domain of Greyhawk, the Wild Coast, Furyondy, Veluna, Shield Lands, Perrenland, and Celene
"The lands from the Nyr Dyv to the Yatils have long been a stronghold of good in the Flanaess, home to humans of Oeridian and Flan descent, along with dwarves, and elves. The rich soil, pleasant climate, and healthy trade relations with neighbors to the east, south, and west, make it a strong and wealthy region."[6]
"Northern Reaches"
Centered on the lands of Iuz north of Lake Whyestil, it also includes Perrenland, the Horned Society and "most of the land from the western edge of the Vesve Forest across the north-central Flanaess[...]"
"These lands are generally wilderness dotted with ruined human towns and active orc lairs, with a cool to temperate climate."

Eastern Flanaess

The Lazzaretti map (595 CY), by Rob Lazzaretti, 2005.
This is the demesne of the former Great Kingdom, including Aerdiaak (the North Province which became the North Kingdom), and the Fief of Ahlissa (which became the United Kingdom of Ahlissa).
"Old Aerdy East"
The eastern half of the former Great Kingdom, Including the Bone March, North Kingdom, Ahlissa, Sunndi, and Almor.
"The lands south and east of the Rakers and north of the Vast Swamp, off to the Solnor coast, were the heartland of the Aerdy, the Great Kingdom. These lands are rich and their climate pleasant, although years of civil war and oppression have damaged the economy. Many orcs and goblinoid races live among the numerous, warlike Oeridians here."[5]
"Old Aerdy West" or "Old Nyrond"
The western half of the former Great Kingdom, "It broke away to become the kingdom of Nyrond (now reduced in size)."[5] This regio includes the lands of Nyrond, the Urnst States, Tenh and the Theocracy of the Pale.
"The lands between the eastern Nyr Dyv and the line marked by the southern Rakers are temperate and fertile. Folk of Oeridian, Suloise, and Flan ancestry live in relative harmony here."[5]

Northern Flanaess

"Bitter North" or "Old Blackmoor"
Northwest. This includes the Chakyik and Wegwiur, as well as Arn.
"These lands north of the Yatil Mountains, from the Drawmidj Ocean coast to the Dulsi River, are a region of steppes and coniferous forests with a climate that varies from cool to frigid, making this a sparsely settled area home mostly to nomads and goblinoids."[7]
North Kingdoms, Thillonrian Peninsula, or "Barbarian North"
Northeast. It is an "isolated, mountainous region ... home to many [Suel tribes like the Fruztii, Cruski, and Schnai], who call their land Rhizia". It is characterized by "a ruggedly beautiful landscape of high mountains, coniferous forests, and deep fjords. The climate is subarctic, with rocky soil and a brief growing season."[5] [5]

Western Flanaess

Baklunish Basin or "Baklunish West"
Northwest; includes Zeif, Ekbir, Tusmit, Ket, and Ull.
"Survivors of the Invoked Devastation settled these temperate prairies, forests, and coastal lands about one thousand years ago [after the Great Migrations]. Largely separated from the rest of the Flanaess by the great Yatils, Barrier Peaks, and Crystalmist Mountains." These relams are a stronghold of Baklunish culture."[7]
Sea of Dust
The remnants of the former Suel Empire after the Twin Cataclysms, during which the Empire of the Suel was decimated in the Rain of Colorless Fire..
"This wasteland, where the Suel Imperium once stood, is beset by howling winhds, terrible dust storms, and rains of volcanic ash and cinders from the Hellfurnaces."[8]

Neighboring lands

Regions on the edges of the Flanaess include:

Amedio Jungle and Hepmonaland
Tropical lands to the south covered primarily in thick rainforests or savannahs.

The Schley map, from the DMG 2024.

Except in the far north, temperatures reach below freezing (32°F) only in the winter months[7][9] of Sunsebb and Fireseek and sometimes at night in late autumn and early spring. Even then, temperatures seldom dip below 0°F.[7][9] The northeast and central northern regions of the Flanaess are the coldest,[7][9] with cold weather extending earlier into Ready'reat and later into Readying, making winter "twice as long".[7][9] The warm currents of the Dramidj Ocean moderate the climate of the lands that border it.[7][9]

Summer typically lasts five or more months[7][9] (including both Low and High Summer).

Prevailing winds blow from the northeast in winter and autumn and from the southeast the rest of the year.[7][9] Wintry northern winds are sometimes known as "Telchur's breath," while easterly winds are sometimes called "Atroa's laugh."[citation needed] Plentiful rainfall supports bountiful agriculture throughout most of the Flanaess.[7][9]
