Alignment
As a race, drow are usually evil. Exceptions exist, the most notable being Leda, Nilonim, Tysiln San, and Landis Bree, but these are highly unusual. In earlier editions, drow were chaotic evil. Beginning with Third Edition, drow are usually neutral evil. There have been encounters with nonevil drow, but these are distrusted as much as their brethren, due to their reputation.

Information about drow culture, by and large, is only evidenced by that found in Erelhei-Cinlu and the Vault of the Drow.

Society
Drow society is primarily matriarchal, with priestesses of their evil spider goddess Lolth in the highest seats of power. Males are considered inferior to females within drow society, and while some males may be respected if they are powerful wizards, they are never allowed to rule. The drow sometimes use their dark arts to turn humanoid slaves into living sculptures.

Drow society is based upon violence, murder, cunning, and the philosophy that only the strong survive (though in the Drow tongue, a quirk of the language creates a reversal of cause-and-effect; more correctly, it can be translated as "those who survive are strong").  Hence, most drow plot endlessly to murder or otherwise incapacitate their rivals and enemy drow using deceit and betrayal.  Drow, particularly in higher positions, are constantly wary of assassins and the like.  Their society, as a whole, is seemingly nonviable.  The only reason they do not murder themselves to extinction is by the will of Lolth, working primarily through her clergy.  Lolth does not tolerate any drow that threaten to bring down her society, and the clergy make certain that perpetrators cease their destructive actions by either threatening or killing them, depending on her mood.

There are exceptions to the rule, of course.  Some communities of drow worship other gods (like Vhaeraun or Kiaransali) and thus their hierarchy changes, reverses the roles of males and females, or results in other differences in their social order.

Most drow societies hate surface elves, but will wage war with almost any surface race and other subterranean races, such as mind flayers, svirfneblin, duergar, kuo-toa, dwarves, and orcs, for spoils and territory.

Rarely, some drow are children of interspecies mating between drow and another species, and usually share characteristics of both. The term "half-drow" (used in earlier editions) usually refers to a person who has both drow and human heritage.

Drow houses
Especially in Erelhei-Cinlu, drow society is organized into a hierarchy of "noble" houses.  Traditionally, there are seven major houses in power at any given time.
{{quoted text|The principal organization in drow culture and society is the house, an extended clan that comprises many related families, plus a number of lesser families who have pledged loyalty to the house. A house’s membership also includes some (potentially very large) number of indentured drow servants and slaves of other species. A house usually specializes in a business, a service, or a craft that supports by providing income.

Religion
Houses are in constant competition with one another. They vie for money, for prestige, and, more than anything else, for power over others — the surest sign of Lolth’s approval.
The gods most commonly worshiped by the drow include Lolth, the Elder Elemental Eye, Keptolo, Kiaransali, Vhaerun, and Zinzerena. Other fell entities and demon lords may also be worshiped.

Notable drow
No tactic is outside the rules in this ongoing conflict. Raids against another house’s outlying property (farming caverns, trade caravans, or hunting parties) are commonplace. Rumors about disloyalty, conspiracies with surface elves, or heresy against Lolth are circulated so frequently that no one knows what to be sure of. Assassinations, both by blade and by the use of special drow poisons, are a constant threat. Bodyguards and food tasters are as necessary to the survival of a high-ranking drow as air and water. Squabbles within a house also occur from time to time as relatives jockey for position. It’s a rare occurrence, though far from unknown, for drow to assassinate their own parents or siblings if that’s what it takes to create a path for advancement.}}
Known drow of Greyhawk include Clannair Blackshadow, Derken Gale, Jawal Severnain, and Landis Bree of Greyhawk City; Tysiln San of the Valley of the Mage; Eclavdra of House Eilserv and her clone Leda; and Edralve of the Slave Lords.

The drow of the moon Celene include Queen Lililth "Darkmane," her advisor Xerolan'th, and the priestess Tathis Spiderheart.
In 592 CY, after the Priestess Wars, to avoid "the dynamic rivalry of the houses" from once again erupting into civil war, an "eighth noble family was introduced: the Vae"14 to replace the exiled Kilsek.  After this, House Noquar and Everhate fall and are replaced by 597 CY with Shi'quos (at Noquar's rank) and Xaniquos (as the eighth rank house).DotU3e  After that, when Tormtor falls and Xaniquos takes their number one slot, Zhiq'nah is brought in as the bottomn-most eighth house.Underdark4eMToF

Heraldry
The word "drow" is of Scottish origin, an alternative form of "trow", which is a cognate for "troll". Trow/drow was used to refer to a wide variety of evil sprites. Except for the basic concept of "dark elves", everything else about drow was apparently invented by TSR's writers.
In drow culture, the noble houses commonly use individual symbols to identify their members, property, and servitors. Other symbols include those used as way-markers, to mark sacred or holy sites, or for house defense.  These runes are often enchanted as magical traps.DotU2e  House symbols are frequently given an additional marking on the house glyph which indicates the bearer's significance within the house, a "power suffix".DotU2e

Dungeons & Dragons co-creator Gary Gygax stated that "Drow are mentioned in Keightley's The Fairy Mythology, as I recall (it might have been The Secret Commonwealth--neither book is before me, and it is not all that important anyway), and as dark elves of evil nature, they served as an ideal basis for the creation of a unique new mythos designed especially for the AD&D game" ("Books Are Books, Games Are Games" in Dragon #31). This establishes Gygax's source for the term as Thomas Keightley's The Fairy Mythology, Illustrative of the Romance and Superstition of Various Countries (1828; aka The World Guide to Gnomes, Fairies, Elves, and Other Little People).
Some known drow noble houses specific to the World of Greyhawk™ and their symbols are shown on the table.

Drow were first mentioned in the Dungeons & Dragons game in the 1977 Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual under "Elf," where it is stated that "The 'Black Elves,' or drow, are only legend." They made their first statistical appearance in Gygax's Hall of the Fire Giant King (1978). The story continued in modules D1 Descent into the Depths of the Earth, D2 Shrine of the Kuo-Toa, D3 Vault of the Drow, and Q1 Queen of the Demonweb Pits each of which expanded on drow culture. The first D&D manual that fulls stas for drow appeared in was the original Fiend Folio (1981).

The drow (rhyming either with "now" or "throw"),[1] dark elves are a generally evil, dark-skinned subrace of elves dwelling chiefly underground.

Ecology

Drow weapons and armor (usually made of adamantine or another metal unique to the Underdark) slowly lose their magical properties if exposed to the sun. In Advanced Dungeons & Dragons first and second editions, drow weapons disintegrated upon exposure to sunlight unless specifically treated. Drow often employ hand crossbows, a weapon most consider exotic.

Environment

After the great war amongst the elves, the drow were forced underground to what is now known as the u nderoerth, a vast system of caverns and tunnels spanning much of the continent. The drow have since built cities across the underoerth, becoming one of the most powerful races therein.

Drow are known to dwell beneath the Pomarj, and beneath the Domain of Greyhawk, where they worship elemental forces.

Some known drow settlements include:

Typical physical characteristics

Drow characters are extremely intelligent, charismatic and dexterous, but share surface elves' comparative frailty and slight frames. Females tend to be slightly taller than males, though the difference is barely noticable to the untrained eye. Drow are characterized by white or silver hair, obsidian black skin, and red (or rarely gray, violet, or yellow) eyes, as well as innate spell-like abilities and spell resistance. This is balanced by their light sensitivity.

Drow males are commonly wizards or fighters. Females are almost always clerics and almost never wizards.

Alignment

Drow of the only (known) established drow culture on Oerth are typically evil and worship Lolth. Exceptions exist, the most notable being Jawal Severnain, Tysiln San, Landis Bree, Leda, Nilonim, Jalvan, and Ool Eurtz. In earlier editions, drow are always chaotic evil. Beginning in third edition (2000), drow are usually neutral evil. There are encounters with non-evil drow, but these are often met with a "mixture of curiosity and fear,"[2] due to their reputation.

Society and culture

Drow, as depicted in D1-2 Descent into the Depths of the Earth (1981). Art by Bill Willingham. Note the Spider-Man chest to the lower left, containing Iron Man's helmet and Captain America's shield.

Information about drow culture, by and large, is only evidenced by that found in Erelhei-Cinlu and the Vault of the Drow.

Lolth does not tolerate any drow who threaten to bring down her society, and the clergy ensure perpetrators cease their destructive actions by either threatening or killing them, depending on her mood.

There are exceptions to the rule, of course. Some communities of drow worship other gods (like Vhaeraun or Kiaransali) and thus their hierarchy changes, reverses the roles of males and females, or results in other differences in their social order.

Most drow societies hate surface elves, but will wage war with almost any surface society, and fight against other subterranean species such as mind flayers, svirfneblin, duergar, kuo-toa, dwarves, and orcs, for spoils and territory.

"The principal organization in drow culture and society is the house, an extended clan that comprises many related families, plus a number of lesser families who have pledged loyalty to the house. A house’s membership also includes some (potentially very large) number of indentured drow servants and slaves of other species. A house usually specializes in a business, a service, or a craft that supports by providing income.

Houses are in constant competition with one another. They vie for money, for prestige, and, more than anything else, for power over others — the surest sign of Lolth’s approval.

No tactic is outside the rules in this ongoing conflict. Raids against another house’s outlying property (farming caverns, trade caravans, or hunting parties) are commonplace. Rumors about disloyalty, conspiracies with surface elves, or heresy against Lolth are circulated so frequently that no one knows what to be sure of. Assassinations, both by blade and by the use of special drow poisons, are a constant threat. Bodyguards and food tasters are as necessary to the survival of a high-ranking drow as air and water. Squabbles within a house also occur from time to time as relatives jockey for position. It’s a rare occurrence, though far from unknown, for drow to assassinate their own parents or siblings if that’s what it takes to create a path for advancement."

In 592 CY, after the Priestess Wars, to avoid "the dynamic rivalry of the houses" from once again erupting into civil war, an "eighth noble family was introduced: the Vae"[3] to replace the exiled Kilsek. After this, House Noquar and Everhate fall and are replaced by 597 CY with Shi'quos (at Noquar's rank) and Xaniquos (as the eighth rank house).[4] After that, when Tormtor falls and Xaniquos takes their number one slot, Zhiq'nah is brought in as the bottomn-most eighth house.[5][6]

Heraldry

In drow culture, the noble houses commonly use individual symbols to identify their members, property, and servitors. Other symbols include those used as way-markers, to mark sacred or holy sites, or for house defense. These runes are often enchanted as magical traps.[11] House symbols are frequently given an additional marking on the house glyph which indicates the bearer's significance within the house, a "power suffix".[11]

Some known drow noble houses specific to the World of Greyhawk™ and their symbols are shown on the table.

Religion

"Despite their sense of superiority, the drow fear one thing: their dark goddess Lolth, Queen of Spiders.
Lolth is a nightmare that few can comprehend. Although she grants the drow incredible power, wealth, and influence, she is also utterly corrupting. Anyone who worships Lolth walks on a knife’s edge over madness, evil, and death. Described here are the various stages of this life path, called Lolthtanchwi. The Punishments of Lolth."[13]

The gods most commonly worshiped by the drow include:

Some drow, especially of House Eilserv, worship a nameless Elder Elemental God (which has ties to Tharizdun) instead of Lolth. Other fell entities such as demon lords or Kanchelsis are also sometimes worshipped by some drow.

Notable drow

Known drow of Greyhawk include:

Greyhawk City
The Valley of the Mage
Vault of the Drow
Others
Queen Lililth "Darkmane"
Xerolan'th—Lillith's advisor
Tathis Spiderheart—priestess

In Living Greyhawk

In the nationwide Living Greyhawk campaign, drow threatened the city of Istivin in Sterich during the "Gloom and Disunion Cycle", which started with the adventure Birthday Bash, and continued in Behind The Veil and Bridge Over Svartjet.[27]

In 592 CY, drow infiltrated Istivin, disguised as troubadours and performers.[28]

Creative origins

The word "drow" is of Scottish origin, an alternative form of "trow", which is a cognate for "troll". Trow/drow was used to refer to a wide variety of evil sprites. Except for the basic concept of "dark elves", everything else about drow was apparently invented by TSR's writers.

Regarding the origin or inspiration of drow in Dungeons & Dragons, creator Gary Gygax said:

"Drow are mentioned in Keightley's The Fairy Mythology ... and as dark elves of evil nature, they served as an ideal basis for the creation of a unique new mythos designed especially for AD&D."
—Gary Gygax, "Books Are Books, and Games Are Games", Dragon #31 (Nov 1979

This establishes Gygax's source for the term as Thomas Keightley's The Fairy Mythology, Illustrative of the Romance, and Superstition of Various Countries (1828; aka The World Guide to Gnomes, Fairies, Elves, and Other Little People).

The story continued in adventures D1 Descent into the Depths of the Earth, D2 Shrine of the Kuo-Toa, D3 Vault of the Drow, and Q1 Queen of the Demonweb Pits each of which expanded on drow culture. The first D&D manual with full game stats for drow was the original Fiend Folio (1981).
