Mist dragons are reclusive and antisocial dragons found in naturally foggy or misty environs.[1][2][3]
Ecology
Environment
Mist dragons are commonly found in coastal regions or temperate regions where it rains often, such as grottoes or jungles, and where mist forms such as waterfalls or rapids.[1][2][3][4] Mist dragons most often have a grotto or natural cavern in these types of area, regardless of climate. While they are most often found in warm to tropical areas, they can be found in most climates, even cold ones.
They are omnivorous in the truest sense of the word—they can even eat mud and wood. However, they greatly prefer obtaining sustenance from mist, water spray[1][2] or fog.[5] They do this simply by breathing the fog. It is further known that various fogs taste different.[5]
The locales that mist dragons tend to inhabit, forests and coasts, often put them in conflict with green dragons and bronze dragons respectively. The latter are usually content to ignore mist dragons, but green dragons are often aggressive. A mist dragon will avoid contact for as long as possible until attacking out of frustration or impatience.[4]
Typical physical characteristics
Mist dragons have translucent, "grayish-white"[3] to "shiny, blue-white scales" which become "blue-grey with metallic silver flecks that sparkle in sunlight" as the dragon ages.[1][2] Its eyes are oceanic colors, usually green, with silver pupils that become more prominent until most of the eye is silver. Mist dragons' physical characteristics include a fin running from the head to the end of its flattened tail. Their head thins in an arrow-like shape from the snout and ends in a thick neck. Heavy ridges lay over the eyes, two horns protrude from the back of the skull, and clusters of smaller horns sit at the base of its upper jaw.[4]
The mist dragon give off a rain-like odor.[4]
Personality
Mist dragons are solitary creatures[1][2][3] who seclude themselves inside their lairs where they desire no interaction with sentient creatures, spend large periods of time in contemplation,[4] and avoid combat whenever possible.[1][2]
Society
Most mist dragons predominantly prefer a life of solitude, though when more are found, it is a family group.[1][2][3] Having contact once or twice a year is considered "somewhat more social" than other mist dragons.[5]
Language
Mist dragons speak draconic.[1][2][6]
Relationships
Some mist dragons act as servants of the deities Rillifane Rallathil, and Sehanine Moonbow.[7]
Abilities
- Immunities
- Mist dragons are unscathed by fire and heat.[1][2]
- Breath
- Mist dragons typically avoid combat when possible. However, they can breathe out a lingering, scalding cone of mist which can cause difficulty seeing that is used for offensive purposes.[1][2]
- Mist Form
- Mist dragons can change form into a "mist-like form"[1][2] similar to the spell gaseous form. While in this form the dragon is practically invisible in its natural habitat since it appears to be a cloud of mist, but its flight capabilities are slowed.[1][2][3][6]
- This is frequently a means of avoiding encounters for a mist dragon.[1]
- Spells
- When fully grown, mist dragons can cast all of the following spells: water breathing, wall of fog, create water, control winds, wind wall, solid fog, predict weather, airy water[1][2] as well as fog cloud, sleet storm, wind wall, gust of wind, solid fog, control water and control weather.[6] They are able to continue to cast spells while in mist form.[1][2][3]
