Revision as of 09:25, 5 May 2025

Legends of Greyhawk (also called "LoG") is a massively shared organized-play campaign set in the World of Greyhawk™ and launched in 2025.[1]

Administration

The campaign is administered for Wizards of the Coast by three "premier organizers"; the first announced of these is Baldman Games.[1]

Regions

Unlike Living Greyhawk, the setting regions in which the adventures take place are not linked to real-world locations.[2] This allows adventures to be run at various conventions across the US, and to be usable by anyone once home play and online play begin.[3]

Each of the "premier organizers" have a particular area of the campaign world to which they constrain their adventures. There will be "eight to ten regions of the world that will have story arcs,"[4] which the organizers will create.

Campaign design

While this campaign is inspired by "past and current organized play campaigns", it uses separate rules from Adventurers League and Living Greyhawk.

The Legends of Greyhawk setting, timeline, and storyline are based on material presented in Chapter 5 of the Dungeon Master's Guide (2024)[5] and is set in 576 CY.[1] Although the timeline will move forward, it is originally inspired by known events but will have branch points which may lead to significant historical events differing from those in officially published sources.[1]

"Some important tenets of the Legends of Greyhawk campaign:

  • 2024 Core Rulebooks forward. The campaign uses the newest set of core rules to make it accessible and less intimidating to newer players. All you need is a 2024 Player’s Handbook to get started!
  • Powered by D&D Beyond. You’ll create a character on D&D Beyond to participate in the campaign and earn additional opportunities for rewards through play!
  • Classic D&D setting, shaped by your actions. The campaign is set in the world of Greyhawk. Specifically, the first series of adventures take place in the Central Flanaess. While this campaign is inspired by the material presented in the 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide, it will change based on the actions of heroes present at key in-person and online events!
  • Convention-focused experiences. Legends of Greyhawk adventure content and experiences will be built by the organizers of conventions, optimized for play at conventions. While you can enjoy Legends of Greyhawk adventures in other places sometime after adventures are first available, in-person and online conventions will be where special events happen!
  • A campaign welcoming to everyone. Legends of Greyhawk will be a great experience for newer players, as well as contain enough depth and narrative stakes to engage veteran D&D players. And adventures won’t be too long either, making them perfect for an evening of play, while still being connected to an evolving narrative."

    DnD Beyond (2024)[1]

According to designer Greg Marks, the World of Greyhawk was proposed by David Christ to WotC, and was chosen specifically because it is a setting that is not likely to be in it's own setting sourcebook in the near future, and that it was a lower-magic campaign than others, and that it would enable the organizers to allow gameplay to differ from official content without a new sourcebook altering the timeline.[6] He also reiterated that the events of this campaign don't retroactively change any other content, but rather many classic adventures and content "don't exist as of yet in the campaign timeline. They might happen, but maybe they'll be a little different."[7] or events which "haven't" happened in 576 CY (as opposed to "will not" or "did not"). There will be various "critical events" and "decision points" where players' choices will decide how the campaign moves forward.

Character creation

  • Options are limited to those available in the Players Handbook (2024) and D&D Free Rules (at least at the outset of the campaign).
Players are encouraged to use a free account on DnDBeyond.com for character creation.[8] Though it will never be compulsory,[9] and players may use either digital or print versions of their characters.
  • Ability scores are generated by using either the "standard array" or "point buy" methods
  • Evil alignments are not allowed.
  • All characters begin at level 1.
  • Characters may begin with a "trinket" from the PH2024 Trinkets table.

Advancement

The system by which player characters advanced levels is based upon number of sessions played, rather than exact XP (as is common in organized play). In the early previews, one session played got a PC to 2nd level, a second session got a PC to 3rd, five total sessions earned fourth level, and eight total achieved fifth. The precise number of sessions per levels, however, was expected to change via feedback from the playing community after the previews.[10]

Organizations

There will be organizations from officially published sources available for player characters to join, e.g. Knights of the Hart.[11]

Chronology of the campaign

Preview events

The campaign was previewed for the first time at Magiccon: Chicago (February 21-23, 2025),[1][8] and will launch at GenCon 2025 (Jul 31–Aug 3, 2025).

The preview adventures are based on previous story elements, centered around the Temple of Elemental Evil

Launch event

The adventures for the launch event at Gencon 2025 were announced on 4 May 2025.[15] These are in addition to the preview events (above) also being run at GenCon 2025.

  • Shadows over the Free City—"An attempted heist at the Great Library sparks rumors of a forbidden tome and its connection to evil endeavors."[15]
  • Sword in the Shadows—"Whispers abound of a mysterious package from the Temple of Elemental Evil. Can you find it before the shadows claim it?"[15]
  • Murder Among Thieves (DDXP Track Exclusive)—"A high-ranking figure in the Thieves' Guild has been slain, and turmoil grips the underworld."[16]
  • The Crown of Conspiracy (Special Event)—"A vacant seat on the Directing Oligarchy ignites political maneuvering within the Free City of Greyhawk."[15]
