The Duchy of Dorlin is a major province in northern Keoland.[1]
History
The Duchy of Dorlin is one of the earliest settled regions to be incorporated into the Kingdom of Keoland upon the realm's formal establishment in -342 CY. The Keoish capital of Niole Dra, now officially occupying its own small independent Royal District, was originally founded by the Suel noble House Neheli to rule the inhabitants of the Duchy of Dorlin.
Geography
Borders
The Duchy of Dorlin the largest single province of modern Keoland.
It is bordered to the north by the Barony of Mill Creek and County of Marlbridge; to the northeast by the Barony of Axewood; to the east by the capital Royal District of Niole Dra; to the south by the County of Nimlee; east by the March of Sedenna and Barony of Dilwych; and northwest by the river which divides Keoland from the Gran March.
Major settlements
Dorglast Castle is located in the approximate center of the duchy, 90 miles northwest of Niole Dra. It is the effective regional capital, with a population of 1,080 as of 591 CY, doubling to twice that size during the Rhennee Festival of the Dead during Needfest. The castle consists of a sprawling set of citadels, some ancient and dating back to around the founding of Keoland, connected by walls and fortifications. The town within the capital walls was originally habited by soldiers and servants of the nobility, but is nowadays home to peasants and nobility alike.
To the northeast is located the town of Nirdal.[1]
Notable locations
Dorglast Castle is built on top of a vast network of dungeon tunnels.
Government
The position of Duke of Dorlin is traditionally held by the head of House Neheli, the Suel noble house who originally settled this region around a thousand years ago. The Duchy is passed to another family member whenever the Duke is selected as heir to the throne, as frequently happened during the unbroken Neheli Dynasty of 49 to 278 CY.
As of 591 CY, the current ruler of the Duchy of Dorlin is Duke Cedrian III, a young and ambitious human wizard. He is nephew to the former King Trevlyan III, and is himself a contender to be chosen the next king.
The Duchy of Dorlin is divided into several petty baronies and counties ruled by minor nobles, many of whom rule in absentia from Dorglast Castle.
Count Orloc also inhabits this province.
