The ‘‘‘Weird of Gnatmarsh’’’ was a sorceress who lead a cult in the early 570s based in the Gnatmarsh in the west of Nyrond. The cult worshipped various depraved and wicked powers of the swamp, and grew powerful while plaguing the surrounding territory. It killed and maimed humans, dwarves and elves, even delving into the neighbouring Celadon Forest to the north. In 575 CY she destroyed a naval squadron and took control of the mouth of the Nesser River. Warnes Starcoat and a company of allies then dealt with her. Warnes defeated the Weird in personal combat, in a magical duel that became legendary and established Warnes’ reputation as a formidable wizard. He sank her perverse tower into the swamp in a display of cracklings energy that drew him into the Astral Plane. He returned from his adventure there, which he has not spoken of, with his famed Starcoat that now gives him his name.[1]

The cult lead by the Weird has also been described as a coven.[2]
