Greyhawk Creature
Equiceph
An equiceph depicted in the Miniatures Handbook, art by Stephen Tappin.
General information
Alignment:Often Lawful Evil
Type:Humanoid
First appearance:Miniatures Handbook (2003)

The Equicephs are a race of very large anthropomorphic creatures with an equine head and legs with the torso of a humanoid, originally found in Western Oerik.

Description

Very little is known of the equicephs, except they belonged to a group of creatures who existed long before other races populated Western Oerik known now as the Old Races. They are tremendous people, towering at 11 feet tall and have a head and legs like that of a horse.

Personality

Ancient equicephs of the former nation found in Western Oerik were peace-loving and comparably mild.

Modern equicephs found in other portions of the continent are hateful, despicable, and wholly evil.

Possessions

Typically, equicephs are found wearing very heavy armor specially designed to their unique anatomy. Perhaps something like a coat of plates, banded-/splint- mail, or the equivalent of full plate armor. They often wield immense two-handed weapons; commonly unusual-looking axes similar to an enormous greataxe, poleaxe, or halberd.

Abilities

  • +8 Str
  • +2 Con
  • +2 Wis
  • +2 Cha

Activities

The only *known* living equicephs, which now are found across the ocean from their original homeland, are wicked and loathsome slavers. They make slaves of absolutely any creature or being they can.

History

"The equicephs [of previous eras once had a] peaceful civilization. This ancient society maintained the peace by exiling its worst criminals to a land across the sea. Modern equicephs are the descendants of these cruel lawbreakers. They retain the superior intellect and insight of their ancestors, though they apply their gifts to villainy rather than to harmony.
Whether the peaceful equiceph society still survives somewhere over the horizon or has long ago fallen is a disputed matter of legend." [1].

"The equicephs were one of the Old Races that used to dominate Western Oerik. [...] they were a peaceful people. Rampaging Abyssal armies wiped them out during the Demon War, and no living equiceph has been seen since. Clerics of Nerull, always fond of plundering battlefields, found the remains of a tribe of equicephs. Now the Skeletal Equiceph walks the world again, brought back to unlife by forbidden magic and denied peace even in death." [2]

Rumors & Legends

It is clearly stated that equicephs are no longer seen in Western Oerik. Chainmail Miniatures Game Creative Director, Chris Pramas, said in an interview with Greyhawk Online in 2013[3] there could theoretically be living equicephs in small enclaves who did not involve themselves with the Godwar and who remain isolated, do not have a full civilization, and continue to stay removed from affairs of mortal races.
