The Lazzaretti map (also known as the Paizo map) is the popular name given to the map of the Flanaess released by Paizo Publishing in 2005.
Description
The map consists of four posters, each covering a quadrant of the Flanaess. The map quadrants were packaged with issues of Dungeon magazine, which was being published by Paizo Publishing at the time. The largest Greyhawk map to date, the Paizo map was modeled after the earlier Darlene map. The art is by Rob Lazzaretti, who notably shared some of his design work for the map via Twitter[1][2] According to Lazzaretti, he did a half-page rough sketch first as a sample. The style was further solidified before the map was finalized. Then when doing the actual map he hand-inked areas in black and white, scanned them, and assembled them into a single image in Photoshop.
Scale Information: the poster maps are illustrated at 30 miles per hex.
Publication History
The maps were originally published in installments from January to April 2005 in issues #118-#121. Lazzaretti created the maps in 2004[1].
In 2022, the magazines were still sold by Paizo. In both retail and resale, back-issues of Dungeon magazine were worth substantially more if they included the original map. All four maps (without the magazines) were available on clearance sale as a package for $10.
Reception
The four maps were enormously popular, and after all four were published, Paizo began to sell the poster maps by themselves in response to popular demand. In nearly all quarters, the public lauded the efforts of the publisher and artist. There were some who disliked the fact that the map was illustrated at the then-current year in Greyhawk History, being 595 CY (as opoposed to earlier eras like 576 CY or 585 CY). After the end of the Living Greyhawk era, the maps became considered by many to be the best officially published maps for amount of content in them.
