An artifact of great power, this lantern is capable of emitting powerful spells.
Description
The remarkable artifact called Daoud’s Wondrous Lanthorn originally appeared in the module Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth where it is described as “wrought from the finest yellow gold,” and its “beautifully crafted framework is set with huge jewels and crystal lenses.” Unlike a conventional lantern, the strange and magical lanthorn burns crushed transparent gems to create “an unwavering pure flame” which, if used normally, will burn for a century before requiring refueling of more crushed gems at a total vale of 4,000-10,000 gold pieces. The fuel is consumed more quickly when the lanthorn’s magical properties are employed. Each of the four faces of the lanthorn can be fitted with a unique prism-lens cut of a single gem which can be shuttered or opened to create a variety of magical discharges including the following spells: Hold, Haste, Color Spray, Fear, Emotion (rage), Flame Strike, Confusion, Prismatic Spray, Prismatic Sphere. Daoud of Tusmit originally created seven gem lenses for the lanthorn, but when adventurers found it among Iggwilv’s treasures, three of the lenses were missing. In the original tournament version of the Tsojcanth module, the lanthorn also had a topaz lens which could be used to generate a Slow spell.
Anyone who possesses the lantern will slowly grow more and more possessive of it, to the point of paranoia. They will keep it hidden from others and become suspicious of anyone asking about it or touching it. Progessively, the owner will eventually believe others are trying to take the lantern from them and defend it with violence, if necessary.
History
The lanthorn fell into the hands of the vile witch Hura when she plundered the treasure vault of Daoud in the city of Lopolla some 300 years ago.[1] The witch Hura later took the name Iggwilv. She apparently considered the lanthorn to be among her most prized possessions and kept it in the innermost sanctum of her halls in the Caverns of Tsojcanth.
Living Greyhawk
After it’s recovery by adventurers, the lanthorn went missing again sometime after the Greyhawk Wars.[2]
Speculation
Some have speculated that she experimented with various combinations of the lenses and magical effects to enhance her summoners arts[3], and others have speculated that she hoped the healing light of the lanthorn might cure her daughter Drelnza of her vampirism.[4]
