Quij is an orcish warrior and a former henchman of Robilar.
Description
Quij is "as ugly as they come",[2] and tall and bulky, but average for an orc (6'0", 190lbs).[1]
Personality
Quij is quintessentially a coward. He often puts on a front of being stupider than he is, to keep expectations of him low. He wants and tries to do good, but when it comes down to it, he always acts with cowardice. He tells himself (and others) lies to make himself feel better about it, but ultimately doesn't change the pattern.[1]
Abilities
Quij can converse in Orc, Common, and Giant.
He additionally has "Alertness" and can Track.
Possessions
Quij is known to have had various magical items, presumably from when he adventured with Robilar and acted as his personal porter.
He carried bracers of defense AC 2, ring of shooting stars, ring of spell turning, short sword +2,[2] and later: +3 leather armor, +2 cloak of protection, +2 greataxe (with which he specialized or had "Weapon Focus"), amulet of protection us undead.[3]
Sometimes, Robilar required Quij to wear a full-face helm to hide his race.[1]
Activities
When he was Robilar's henchman, Quij was often left outside adventuring locations to guard mounts and gear. It was his job to carry anything Robilar didn't want to carry.[1]
Relationships
Quij was Robilar's henchman, which brought him into association with Riggby, Otto, Terik, and other members of the Citadel of Eight.
History
Quij was raised in the Pomarj, but left when Robilar sacked his village. He used it as an opportunity to get out because he didn't fit in to orcish society. Quij became Robilar's henchman in 560 CY.[3]
After killing a troll single-handedly in the dungeons beneath Castle Greyhawk, Quij advanced a level.
Quij accompanied Robilar and Riggby on the ill-fated expedition to free Iuz from Zagyg's Godtrap in 570 CY.
Robilar and Quij ventured to the Temple of Elemental Evil in approximately 579 CY, leaving Quij to wait outside the temple guarding his carpet of flying and pair of griffons while Robilar ventured into the depths to plunder the dungeons beneath. By the time Robilar emerged, the bored Quij had made a poncho for himself out of the magic carpet.
After Robilar's keep west of Greyhawk was sacked by the forces of Good, Quij went off on his own, and his whereabouts were a mystery. It was suggested he had rejoined other members of Robilar's scattered forces in the Pomarj.[citation needed]
Astonishingly however, his location was in the Free City of Greyhawk at the Roc and Oliphant Tavern where he went by the name "Ral" and was the bartender and lived in the attic. After the raid on Tenser's castle, Quij became separated from the group and had to avoid capture. He happened upon a roadside shrine to Ralishaz (the deity of misfortune and bad luck) and blacked out there; suffering, feeble, and bedraggled. Quij made a last-ditch appeal for succor and was answered. The statue at the shrine told him to forever wear Ralishaz's holy symbol and to "live in the city where he was in the greatest danger." In the many years since, Quij never removed the string necklace with three small bones on it from his neck. Humorously, Quij still had Robilar's flying carpet which had become a poncho for Quij, and he told people it was a "family heirloom". Quij was still tending bar in 591 CY,[4] though by then he was very old for an orc, at 47.
Rumors & Legends
The specialty of the Green Dragon Inn's kitchen is "Quij's Plate"—a heaping bowl of undercooked sausages and soggy potatoes large enough to please an ogre. The owner wistfully says the orc was qa regular patron years ago but hasn't been seen in years.[5]
