The Chronicle of Secret Times is a large tome written by Uhas of Neheli. Semi-companion to the Official History, it holds a great deal of hidden or forbidden knowledge. It chronicles the scandals, corruptions, crimes and cruelties not fit for Uhas' approved Official History. [1]

Description

The Chronicle has been described as "scandalous" and as containing "sometimes lurid prose". While the majority of the content is accurate and reliable, some of it is also said to be rumor and innuendo. It is only because it is so strongly denied that casts suspicion on whether the denials are real or if they're an attempt to suppress the writings due to their truth.[2][3]

It describes the coming of the Neheli family from the ancient Suel lands and their struggle against the previous lord, Vecna and his lieutenant, Kas. It describes some of the powers and dangers of the Hand and Eye of Vecna, since they feel into the hands of the Neheli briefly, and speculates on how to destroy them.[4] Though the text says little about Vecna himself, a reader can glean some information about the general background and history of Vecna from it,[4] especially about his time with his mother Mazell who was an "untouchable" servant who worked as an embalmer before she was burned at the stake as a witch.[1] Fleeth, the city in which they lived, is also covered in great detail.[1][5] The Chronicle places Vecna in the Sheldomar Valley when the Kingdom of Keoland was yet a new nation.[6]

Many copies of the Chronicle of Secret Times exist, as well as some excerpts or fragments.[1] There is one known to be found in the Library of the Guild of Wizardry. That particular copy is a very, very large tome with a cover made of purple leather.[4] This copy was once requested of Jawal Severnain, Librarian of the Guild's Library, by Mordenkainen of the Circle of Eight.[4] Another copy resides in the Great Library of Greyhawk.[2]

The Chronicle contains a great deal of information about the Silent Ones of Keoland.[3][7]
