The Valorous League of Blindness is a fundamentalist sect of Pholtus operating in Nyrond.
Description
The sect worships Pholtus in his Lawful Neutral aspect. It is supported covertly by the Theocracy of the Pale.[1]
Its' message is:
There is now only one hope of salvation, Pholtus of the Blinding Light. Only those blinded to iniquity and its lures can hope to prevail in these terrible times. Look at how the rich live while you travail to pay their taxes; is this right? But this is how Nyrond is. Hence, Nyrond must be changed, and we're the men to do it, just as we are the men to root out the evil within these lands which matches the evils of Iuz and Aerdi outside.[1]
Its' ultimate aim is to incorporate part of northern Nyrond by secession into the Theocracy itself. It is fundamentally a rebellious group, fomenting virtual insurrection against the Nyrondese crown.[1]
The League was not friendly to demi-humans, which in Spring 585 CY caused gnomes from the Flinty Hills to avoid Arndulanth where the League was operating.[2]
History
In the aftermath of the Greyhawk Wars the League rapidly gained converts, especially northern Nyrond adjacent to the Theocracy. New members were usually amongst gullible, rural folk, who were easily whipped up into hysteria. The League also featured followers among minor nobility, under threat of lynching by their peasants if they did not convert.[1] Members in the northern lands included some amongst the refugees from Tenh.[3]
In about late 584 CY the League's notorious fiend hunter, Zylinchin, with his tiny band of fiend hunters discovered a shrine to Incabulos in Midmeadow. He continued to stalk Nyrond seeking people to impale and burn at the stake for consorting with fiends. The League was engaged in fiend hunting in the lands neighbouring Almor, where it did not espouse the "Lesser Nyrond" doctrine of abandoning eastern lands.[1]
In Spring 585 CY King Archbold III refrained from taking action against the League due to the Pale ambassador, Grand Templar Ivanic Temzien, promoting the League and its leader (Grishken), and Archbold needing the Pale's support and alliance.[4] Shortly prior a rabble rouser of the League incited a mob in Swan Bore to lynch four hapless visiting merchants.[5] The League was gaining followers in Midmeadow due to the food riots resulting in looting.[6] The League's supporters in Arndulanth under the leader Carindrell assisted in maintaining law and order, resulting in the Mayor being cowed and unable to take steps against them.[7] At the time most Nyrondese detested the League, but officials were usually unable to act against them to avoid offending the Pale. Dissuading hysterical peasants was also difficult when doing so might lead to being denounced as heretics by the Knights Valorous of the League.[8]
The church of Pholtus was bitterly divided between priests and followers of the lawful good and lawful neutral aspects, with the latter dominated by the fervent members of the League. The lawful good priests come close to decrying the League as heresy.[9]
The Sagacious Society was known to be strongly opposed to the League.[1] The Pholtan paladin, Farenne of Shining White, loathes the League and prior to Spring 585 CY ran a group of them off her lands.[10] Cunal Huldane of Mowbrenn also hates the League, and wishes to destroy it and Zylinchin.[11] Duke Regurd Korenflass of Oldred also loathes the League.[12] Field General Myariken, a lawful good follower of Pholtus, in command of the northern front in Spring 585 CY would drive out the League if he was able.[13]
Members
Members are peculiar people. Many wear blinders show proudly their refusal to see anything but doctrinal creed. Some have gone to the extreme of putting out an eye, on the basis the other is enough to see the wisdom of Pholtus's teachings. All members are ascetic and intolerant of those they do not approve of.[14]
The League has two notable leaders, Grishken of Midmeadow and Carindrell of Arndulanth.[1]
The Knights Valorous are the elite of the Valorous League, warriors and warrior priests who are self-appointed rooters-out of evil.[1]
The Valorous League of Blindness in the Living Greyhawk campaign
In the Living Greyhawk campaign, the League was a metagaming organization in the Nyrond region players could belong to. It featured in various regional and meta-regional adventures.[15]
