Shining White is a castle on Fairwind Bay on the south coast of the Kingdom of Nyrond.

Description

Shining White is a stone castle that stands about a mile from the cliff coastline of Fairwind Bay. Its central tower keep of pure white stone is topped with glowing lances bearing continual light spells. It is part of a series of continual light beacons act as lighthouses for a 25 mile stretch of coastline.[1]

History

In Spring 585 CY the castle was under the rule of Farenne of Pholtus, who administered an area at least 25 miles along the coastline. She had previously run followers of the Valorous League of Blindness from her lands. She was bitter to King Archbold III, and refused to pay taxes or tithes. Any smugglers, slavers, pirates, or criminals caught were delivered to authorities in Wragby whose ruler, Viscount Jarrold, she trusted.[2]

Notable individuals

Notable individuals in or from Shining White include:

  • Farenne of Pholtus, commander of the castle.
  • Her friends and retainers, including a half-elven-bard and ranger from Wragby.
  • Schuster, a half-elven mage.

Government

Farenne of Pholtus presumably was appointed as provincial ruler of the castle and surrounding lands by the monarch in the usual way. There was a reorganization of provincial administration under King Lynwerd I that commenced Needfest 1, 591 CY. It was not detailed whether Shining White fell within the control of the Duchy of Korenflass or the Viscounty of the Eventide.[3]

Economy

The lands of the south coast are not very fertile, with the soil being often chalky, brittle and somewhat stony, thus being mostly used as poor grazing land. Most people on the coast make their living from fishing, trading, or the support industries for the navy. Smuggling also resurged since the Greyhawk Wars, and the breakdown of law and order in parts of Nyrond.[4]

Military

The castle is manned by 80 elite militia strongly loyal to Farenne, along with her retainers/friends including a half-elven bard and a ranger from Wragby with unparalleled knowledge of the local coastline.[1]

Living Greyhawk campaign

In the Living Greyhawk campaign, Shining White featured in several adventures. It was also detailed in the "Nyrond Gazetteer" fan-created sourcebook. The organizing Triad for the Nyrond region created maps of Nyrond showing the borders of various provinces, including that Shining White fell just within the eastern border of the Viscounty of the Eventide.[5]
