Wragby is a large city in the south of Nyrond located on the northern coast of Relmor Bay.
History
Viscount Jarrold's grandfather bought the town and the local lands for some eight miles around from the king of the time, with the proviso that the naval dockyards remain crown property.[1]
Due to Viscount Jarrold's rule over Wragby, in the aftermath of the Greyhawk Wars the town did not suffer as much as most of Nyrond because taxes did not increased appreciably. Wragby's main problem was that many outsiders sought to flee there. Jarrold tried several measures to prevent this, including having local people issued passes and even trying tattooing them. These plans failed. By Spring 585 CY the town was being walled and non-residents only allowed in the Foreign Quarter.[2]
The navy in Spring 585 CY was a problem in Wragby, being usually underpaid and drunk. Viscount Jarrold threatened Fleet Admiral Hugarnd with denying access to the naval dockyards unless they were disciplined. Local people also beat up navy men on occasion, resulting in the dockyards being walled off and naval men not allowed into the main quarters of the town. This caused much anger in the navy, with the threat of reprisals and violent street fighting.[3]
Geography
Wragby is located on Fairwind Bay, a western arm of Relmor Bay.[4]
Shining White is located along the coast to the west, and Storport and Oldred along the coast to the east.
Travel
Wragby features a naval base, and good fishing in Fairwind Bay presumably supports a fishing fleet. Support is smuggled to Onnwal.
The main road along the coast of Fairwind Bay runs west from Wragby to Shining White and onto Nessermouth. Roads run east along to coast to Storport, and slightly inland onto Oldred.
People
Population
Wragby's population in 585 CY was 7,000[5], and in 591 CY was 7,300.[6]
The races of Nyrond can all be expected to be found here, being humans (with an Oeridian dominance, and Suel present, as ethnic background), Olve (mainly sylvan with a small high elf presence), Halfling (stout), Dwarf, Gnome, half-elf and half-orc.[7]
Nyrond generally is Lawful Neutral in alignment, with Lawful Good, Neutral Good, Chaotic Good, and Neutral also prevalent.[8]
Strong sympathy with the rebel movement in Onnwal is felt here, and weapons and goods are smuggled out of Wragby to the Onnwal coast.[9]
Notable individuals
Notable individuals include:
- Viscount Jarrold.
- The old high priestess of Istus, Alishendra, in Spring 585 CY was nearing 90 years of age and mumbled in riddles.[10]
Religion
The common religions of Nyrond can be expected to be followed here, being Heironeous (the official state religion), Beory, Rao, Pelor, Zilchus, Norebo, Pholtus, Ralishaz, Boccob, Delleb, Celestian.[11]
Following the Greyhawk Wars superstitions and the worship of evil gods (including Hextor and Incabulos) began to grow as a sign of the despair of the common folk.[12]
Wragby is famous for its unique 600-year old Temple of Istus. The Bakluni goddess has hardly ever had a following amongst [[Oeridians]. The temple's architecture is unusual, with strangely slanted roofs and gutters, so that from many angles it appears the architect and builders suffered hallucinations when the place was planned and erected. The crouching stone gargoyles are of sinister design.[13]
Languages
The common languages of Nyrond can be expected to be spoken here, being Common, Nyrondese, Old Oeridian, Elven, and Halfling.[14]
Government
Viscount Jarrold's grandfather bought the town and the local lands for some eight miles around from the king of the time, with the proviso that the naval dockyards remain crown property.[15]
There was a reorganization of provincial administration under King Lynwerd I that commenced Needfest 1, 591 CY. It was not detailed whether Wragby fell within the control of the Duchy of Korenflass or the Viscounty of the Eventide.[16]
Economy
Resources
Fishing is noted as being good in Fairwind Bay.[17]
Nyrond projects naval power into Relmor Bay through various naval ports including Wragby.[18]
Trade
Trade has boomed through Wragby since King Lynwerd took power.[19]
Currency
The usual currency of Nyrond would be used in Wragby.
Rumors & legends
On the day the Pact of Greyhawk was signed the gargoyles on the temple of Istus were said to spit forth pools of blood. [20]
In early Spring 585 CY, two gargoyles on the templeof Istus were found with their heads sundered. Within each was found a mummified toad with a bizarrely-shaped gem in its mouth. No one knows what this all means, but most interpreted such events as being dire omens for Nyrond's future. The high priestess of Istus at the time, Alishendra, was unable to explain.[21]
Living Greyhawk campaign
In the Living Greyhawk campaign, Wragby featured in several adventures. It was also detailed in the "Nyrond Gazetteer" fan-created sourcebook. The organizing Triad for the Nyrond region created maps of Nyrond showing the borders of various provinces, including that Wragby fell just within the Duchy of Korenflass.[22]
