The Pearl Sea is the name for the body of water south of the Densac Gulf. "According to various old maps, [it] is loosely defined by island chains inhabited by pirates, south of which is the so-called Pearl Sea."[1] In the southeastern waters off the Amedio coast it is called the Vohoun Ocean. Where the sea meets the west coast of Hepmonaland, it is instead known as the Vogan Sea.

"The Pearl Sea is dotted with dozens of islands, some relatively small and others quite large, all of them mysterious and dangerous. Monstrous reptiles, black-hearted pirates, and ancient cultures can be found on these remote islands, yet something far more sinister lurks in the lightless depths of the sea that surrounds them."[2]

"In its deeper areas, it is plagued by sea monsters."[3]

Among the notable locations in the Pearl Sea are the Pirate Isles, the Mist Kingdom, and the Isle of Dread.

Very little is known about the culture and people of the Pearl Sea.[4]

"Much of what is known about the southern seas in recent times comes from the logs of captains unlucky enough to have been blown off course. Few northerners travel these waters willingly. Yet, this was not always the case. Centuries ago, the rulers of the Kingdom of Keoland, north of Sasserine, were known as the Explorer-Kings. Following their victory over the Necromancers of Toli, they often competed with the Overkings of the Great Kingdom for dominance of the Sea of Yar (now known as the Azure Sea). The Explorer-Kings were notorious for their wanderlust, and they sponsored numerous expeditions to the far south. Many of the kings even led the voyages in person. It is from their travels that the people of the Flanaess have developed a general picture of the nature of the region, even if it is sometimes based more on legend than fact."[5]

The Pearl Sea is named for the pearls famously found there.[4] It extends far south 1,000 leagues (or more).[6]

There is a major weather pattern—a wind current—beginning in the Pearl Sea and going northeast.[7] Hurricanes originating in the Pearl Sea affect the western coastal regions of Hepmonaland.[8][3]
