Greyhawk Creature
Kelpie
General information
Size:Medium
Alignment:Neutral Evil
First appearance:White Plume Mountain (adventure)

A kelpie is an intelligent, aquatic creature that lures men to drown in their embrace.

Description

A kelpie is composed of aquatic plant material most resembling green seaweed, but can form itself into almost any shape it desires. They most often shape themselves into beautiful human females to initially attract men to them.[1]

Abilities

After creating an initial attraction a kelpie then attempts to charm a man to join them in the water. The kelpie then wraps itself around its victim and attempts to drown him. Strangely enough, their charm spell does not seem to work on women.[1]

Since they are usually wet, kelpies have some resistance to fire and fire effects.[1]

Rumors and legends

Legend has it that kelpies were created by the sea gods to punish men for having the rashness to travel the seas without paying proper homage to them. Since few women were initially part of sea travel, that may be why they are immune to a kelpie's wiles.[1]

Environment

Kelpies could be found in almost any body of deep water - from oceans and seas, to stagnant swamps and underground grottos. They have the ability to leave the water and walk on land for short periods of time.[1]
