The Book of Hours is a large tome containing ancient history and, it is said, the book is also prophetic.
Description
"By an anonymous priest of Delleb circa 300 CY
Copied by Didrias Longhand, freescribe of Littleberg, Furyondy, in 405 CY .
Physical Description: The plain brown leather covers of this book measure 7" x 9" and are clasped. The book has 365 vellum pages of 25 lines each, with narrow, painted border decorations. These paintings, beautifully rendered, depict various famous persons and events.
Contents: The original author went to great pains to chronicle important historical events, recording them under the day they happened, with entries for every day of the year. Great divination magic was apparently used to determine the exact hour of some crucial events in history, such as how the Overking was crowned at Rauxes at two in the afternoon. What few detractors the book has among contemporary sages have claimed that no magical divination can be so precise, and that the hours were arbitrarily assigned. Most entries in the book deal with the Kingdoms of Furyondy, Keoland, and Veluna, though Nyrond and the Great Kingdom are also frequently mentioned.
The illustrations of the Longhand copies are said to be reproductions of the originals, though the Longhand illustrations are clearly in a more contemporary art style."[1]
This enigmatic volume is a tremendous resource regarding history, though it is somewhat obscure and esoteric. In addition to recording extraordinarily precise history, it also presents information regarding "the rulers and momentous events ... for many decades into the future."[2] "There are no few mighty men who would seek to destroy the book if they knew its contents."[2] Those who use it in their research, whether scholars or laymen, are able to discern much more information than would typically otherwise be found.[1]
The contents of the manuscript are organized by day of the year.[1] Since there are 365 pages, but only 364 days in the dozenmonth of Luna, it can be presumed there is a title page, prologue, or other page in the book.
The copy owned by Rillikandren is guarded by spells and wards, but also it will only revel its contents to a high-level (16+) cleric of Boccob or Istus.[2]
History
"The Book of Hours... is said to have been traded to a peerless high priest of Boccob, Jarnzaydin of Jalpa, by an avatar of Istus herself."[2]
Rillikandren, High Priest of Boccob in Rauxes, owns a copy of this text. Although, after the collapse of the Great Kingdom and the fall of Rauxes, where his tower was, the fate of Rillikandren and his copy of the Book of Hours is unknown.
