Uerth is a parallel Material Plane world to Oerth.[1]
Description
"Uerth is a place similar to Oerth but several shades darker."[2] It is a "a parallel but opposite world.[3] "On Uerth, dweomers are weak, chancy things."[4][5]
There are very few details written in officially published material about this alternate Material Plane. It is typically referred to by name only, as being a far-away, strange, or foreign world.
Inhabitants
"Strange doppelgängers of [people from Oerth] exist on this world, where they live a life of villainy."[2] They are "oppositely-aligned mirror images"[6] of their Oerthly counterparts. While this typically results in an "evil double"[6], there is at least one case of an evil person having a "good" double.[3]
Known NPCs
- Bilarro—opposite/double of Robilar
- Ahsat—opposite/double of Iggwilv/Tasha; good-aligned; slain by simulacrum of Iggwilv[3]
- Lyndurm—opposite/double of Murlynd
- Rulzon—opposite/double of Nolzur
- Xagig—opposite/double of Zagig, who also has a double from Yarth.[7]
- Komoghet—opposite/double of Keoghtom
- Wedrah—opposite/double of Heward
- Aluuq—opposite/double of Quaal
Creative Origins
Alternate Oerths
In a 1984 article for Polyhedron Newszine, Gary Gygax revealed several "alternate Oerths" while explaining the setting for his Heroes Challenge game books, co-written with author Flint Dille and published under the aegis of the Dungeons & Dragons Entertainment Corporation by the Wanderer Book division of Simon & Schuster.
"... [the] action takes place on Yarth, a place somewhat similar to Oerth, the setting of Greyhawk, et al. It has fewer magical properties than Oerth but more than Earth. It is not impossible that additional works will be contracted for in months to come, action being set on Yarth or perhaps another alternate world, Aerth. On Earth, magic is virtually non-existent. On Uerth, dweomers are weak, chancy things. Yarth has a sprinkling of things magical, and Oerth is pure magic."
—Gary Gygax, Polyhedron (1984)[8]
Publishing History
The five parallel worlds of Oerth—Oerth, Aerth, Uerth, Yarth, and Earth—were mentioned in the third edition adventure Expedition to the Ruins of Greyhawk (2007) and thus found their way into canon.[1]
Gary Gygax gave details in Castle Zagyg: Eastmark Gazetteer which set the Free Town of Yggsburgh and all its environs on the world of Urth.[9] It is distinct from Uerth and is not populated by evil doubles. Though it is similar to Oerth. it is not one of the five official parallel worlds.
