Various members of the Sarneth family featured in the Living Greyhawk campaign in the Veluna (VEL) region.
Eldried Sarneth (Pal4 of Rao)[3] was the Plar of Veluna, and the noble which ruled the diocese of Grayington located in the north central part of Veluna.[4] The diocese border stopped just short of Veluna City, which was ruled by the Canon of Veluna although the city itself still fell under the military protection of Grayington. There were very few other noble houses, and the plar owned almost all the land, in the diocese. He was the biggest owner of land in Veluna after the church of Rao.[5]
The diocese’s representative to the Celestial Order of the Moons in 591 CY until his assassination (by Nerull cultists) in 594 CY[6] was Mathew Sarneth, the younger brother of Eldried and Jolene’s uncle. He was known to preach Rao’s beliefs including to the Order[7], was a cleric of Rao and “opinionated”[8].
While Veluna was generally tolerant in matters of religion[9], Grayington was the most religious and intolerant of the seven dioceses, shown through a lack of churches of other faiths, unwillingness of inhabitants to listen to any non-Raon priest, and sometimes rudeness towards those of other religions.[10]
The Sarneth family tradition was the eldest son (not daughter it would appear) took the role of plar on “coming of age” at 24[11] when regarded as old enough to rule properly[12]. Veluna was not a patrilineal realm, so this was a Sarneth family tradition (perhaps reflecting the conservative nature of the diocese). Duchess Clairese Landos had inherited the Plar of Whitehale[13], and the Plar of Kempton had been female for 5 generations due to the tendency of the Bassalle family to have daughters[14].
Eldried was reluctant to hand over the plarship to Redin when due in Fall 593 CY[15] as he was more focused on religious matters than administration of the diocese[16]. However, apparent financial irregularities in the diocese’s tax affairs became apparent in 594 CY[17] that led to Redin demanding Eldried abdicate in his favor[18] in Spring 594 CY[19] rather than cause scandal.
Soon after Veluna was invaded by the forces of “the One”, the lich and former Canon Herion, and Canon Hazen was killed at the Battle of Whitehale with the Crook of Rao being lost[20]. The forces of Grayington were held back by Plar Redin to defend their own diocese, and even withdrawn from protecting Veluna City.[21]
Redin sought the position of Canon of Veluna after the death of Canon Hazen.[22] This was opposed by his uncle before his death in Summer 594 CY[23] on the basis he was too young and naive, which Eldried speculated may have been related[24]. Priffin Truft was elected Canon[25], resulting in Redin seceding Grayington from Veluna following his “visions” from Rao.[26]
Eldried was assassinated by demonic cultists soon after while trying to work out who was behind framing him[27], but raised afterwards[28] and then based in Veluna City trying to rebuild his power[29]. Adventurers subsequently rescued the kidnapped Bishop Velt Harkin who was revealed to have been replaced when Redin became plar, and that the demon Marduk and his cultists had been behind the framing of Eldried and secession of Grayington as part of a plot for Marduk to return from banishment.[30]
Redin was abducted by adventurers retained (with plausible deniability) by Veluna to remove him as plar of seceded Grayington[31], and later retired to a monastery to reflect on his crimes. Herion forces were defeated by Veluna by late 595 CY[32].
Eldried sought to regain the plarship and associated lands of Grayington, but the Celestial Order spent over a year squabbling about the succession. It is clear Eldried had no heir after Redin, as Jolene was not in a position to inherit presumably due to her renouncement. The Celestial Order sought to block Eldried reclaiming the plarship, some in spite or revenge with others desiring the plarship themselves. In 596 CY Eldried reached agreement with Count Westin Mori of Devarnish, then the most powerful noble, for Mori to support and campaign for Eldried as plar in exchange for Eldried marrying Elena Mori, the count’s younger (and 22 year old) sister. Eldried sought a bride to bear a legitimate heir to his recovered power. Mori would gain a family claim to Grayington.[33]
This plan did not come to pass. Elena demanded a Flan artifact from Eldried to prove his worth[34], but obtaining that artifact failed[35]. Later it was suggested Redin had cooled on the marriage.[36] Note in 598 CY Elena Mori married King Belvor IV of Furyondy.[37] In 597 CY Grayington still lacked a plar with Eldried sidelined, affecting Veluna politics.[38] By 598 CY Westin Mori had become Plar of Veluna replacing the deposed incumbent Redin[39], and indicating he was the most powerful noble in Veluna[40]. It was unclear whether Eldried regained the plarship of Grayington.
