Description
The Malachite Throne known also as the Fiend-Seeing Throne, is a term sometimes used to synonymously refer to either the office of the Great Kingdom's monarch (particularly during the reigns of Ivid I through Ivid V) or to refer to the physical throne upon which the rulers sat.
The throne is a permanent fixture in the Palace of the Overking in Rauxes.[1] It is nearly impossible to get to, for many reasons. Its physical location not only with the city, but also within the palace, mean that anyone wishing to get to it would have to go through the city's defenses, guards, guard towers, etc; additionally, fiends, monsters, etc. Even more than all that, the palace itself was built with mortar interlaced with magic in its construction, and so is impervious to scrying and teleportation of all kinds.[1]
Powers
"It can open a portal to the very Hells themselves. Those who sat upon it were invulnerable to harm and gifted with true sight. However, use of such powers often came at the cost of the wielder’s sanity, as the ruinous reigns of the four overkings that sat upon it after Ivid I so clearly demonstrated. "[2]
The Malachite Throne opens a gate specifically to the first layer of the Nine Hells—Avernus.[1]
The invincibility the throne offers is an invisible globe of invulnerability, though this is implied to only work for an overking seated upon it.[1] This power does not function against any being coming through a gate opened by the Malachite Throne.[1] Eventually, any user of the throne will go undeniably mad from opening gates. However slight, there is a chance the other-worldly influence of the Hells will seep into the mind of the user, and each time the power is used, it becomes increasingly likely they will be unable to stave off insanity (5% per use).[1]
History
Both wizards and clerics cooperated in the creation of the Malachite Throne. The formation of it was undertaken from 443 CY to 446 CY.[1]
"The Malachite Throne’s origin is widely discussed among the learned. Led by fiendish allies, Ivid discovered a place of surpassing evil known as the Cauldron of Night. In its midst there stood a huge block of green malachite. Over the next three years, a coven of mage-artificers and priests of Hextor worked on the block, shaping it into a mighty throne and drawing upon the malign eldritch energies of the Cauldron to imbue it with its terrible powers.
Their work completed, Ivid’s servants bore the new-made artifact out of the Cauldron to begin its long procession to Rauxes. It is said that its first port of call was the ancient metropolis of Rel Astra, where the sight of it before the walls with Ivid seated upon it was enough to secure the city’s surrender and the defection of the House of Garasteth.
Though the tale of the making of the throne is known to many, the location of the Cauldron of Night remains a closely guarded secret to all but a bare handful of the most wicked and the most wise. Of those, the majority vanished along with the throne itself in the fall of Rauxes. The few that remain guard their secret close."[2]
