The Gnarley Forest is located between the lands of Verbobonc, Dyvers, the Domain of Greyhawk, the Wild Coast, the Welkwood, Celene and the Kron Hills. It is part of a continuous forest with the Welkwood, Celene and the Suss Forest.
Description
The Gnarley is filled with "bronzewood, oak, elm, and hornwood trees."[1]
"The forest is dominated by oak and ipp trees, frequently mixed, with intermittent groves of dekla and yarpick trees. Ferns are found aplenty along the borders of the Jewel and Serault rivers, and thick moss and fungi grow on many rotted timbers and some old trees. Flowering plants are not common, but the beautiful ivoryblossom (a white-petalled, orchid-like plant) makes up in quality for what the forest lacks in quantity of bloom. In the hills, bluebells and crocuses provide a riot of color in areas with thinner tree cover."[2]
The Gnarley Forest is a temperate forest.[3] Trees in a temperate forests are usually deciduous, and lose their leaves with the approach of winter, leaving bare branches until regrowth in the springtime. The largest trees, usually oaks, maples, and ash, can reach heights of 160 feet.[4] The immense trees create an almost complete canopy, blocking out most sunlight and moonlight, so that the usual thick undergrowth of a forest is mostly non-existent; the result is a park-like forest floor interrupted only by fallen trees and rotten trunks.[5]
History
Portions of the Gnarley Forest are claimed by Celene, Dyvers, Verbobonc, and Greyhawk.
Inhabitants
"The forest is home to thousands of woodsmen, sylvan elves, and gnomes."[1]
"An enclave of ogres, gnolls, and orcs, Blackthorn, is hidden within the Gnarley. Roving orcs from the Pomarj annually attempt to use the forest as cover for a massive flanking maneuver against Narwell and Safeton."[1]
"The Furyondian Greenjerkins are 40-odd rangers who patrol the northern Gnarley from a small river port, Stalmaer, at the confluence of the Att and Velverdyva Rivers. Also, over two hundred Gnarley Rangers patrol the entire forest, Gnarley Rangers on the hunt protecting it from harm."[1]
"The forest folk and their druidic allies are wary of intrusions by Greyhawk soldiers and settlers, fearing the whole forest may be cut down for farmland and timber."[1]
A sorority of 44 Swanmays dwell within the Gnarley Forest, led by their matriarch, Serendya.[6]
Inhabitants include:
- Centaurs
- Gnomes
- Sylvan elves
- Woodsmen
- talking owls
- Treants
- Unicorns[7]

The Gnarley dragon was used in both Dyvers regional campaign and the Velverdyva Trade Route meta-region in at least three scenarios for the campaign.[8][9]
In other sources
A green dragon was created as an NPC in the Gnarley forest, for Oerth Journal magazine, in 1999. This is not the "Gnarley dragon", though, since that dragon is male, and this one is not—though she does reside in the Gnarley.
- Chaustichlorinus, an adult green dragon.[10]
