The Greyhawk Guild of Wizardry, also called the Guild of Wizards, the Wizards' Guild,[1], or the Wizard Guild[2] based in the City of Greyhawk, is the largest and most extensive guild of magi in the Flanaess. It also claims to be the least political, secretive, or closed off of any mage guild.

Description

History

The Guild of Wizardry was founded in 393 CY, by the Mad Archmage, Zagig Yragerne.[3] Because of this, the Guild can boast the most extensive collection of arcane texts and magical knowledge in the whole of the Flanaess. This fact plays a large part in the Guild's being the fastest growing guild in Oerik.

The guildhall is in Greyhawk's High Quarter (H13). It is one of three pyramidal buildings in the city, but the only four-sided one. This building is an architectural wonder and is of magical design and impregnable. Its many vaults house numerous tomes, which have been collected and stored here over the last two centuries. Housed here are the magical fortunes of numerous archmagi, including those of the legendary Zagig, or so it is believed.

Recent events

The Guild of Wizardry is still drawing new members from across the Flanaess, due to the Guild being virtually untouched by the Greyhawk Wars. In fact, many magi view the Guild as a sort of "safe haven" from the turmoil that exists in their currently beleaguered homelands.

The Guild has long since taken over the stewardship of the University of Magical Arts, which used to be administered by the more austere Society of Magi. The teaching staff of the University is provided and directed by the Guild. All manner of topics are taught and researched. In fact, the Guild, in cooperation with the University, both teaches and supports the use of so-called "wild," or "chaos magic" in addition to the plethora of other courses of study. This form of magic has seen a resurgence in the last two decades and is reaching heights not seen since the time of the Mad Archmage himself.

Though the Guild of Wizardry is the largest and most extensive guild of mages in the whole of the Flanaess, this position is now being challenged by the Sorcerer's Nexus of Rel Astra. The guild can claim nearly a thousand members in official roles. But in truth, only about half of that number are in the city of Greyhawk at any given time, and many of these are amateurish dabblers or are virtually inactive.

Almost any proven practitioner of arcane magic is eligible to join the Guild of Wizardry, be they wizard, bard, sorcerer, illusionist, or even some more exotic arcane spellcaster.[13][note 1]The only spellcasters unilaterally refused admission to the Guild are those "determined to be a danger to the city or guild",[15] and may also be refused to "those of undisputably evil disposition"[3].

Membership dues for the Guild are 100gp per year,[13][15][3] though winners of the Desportium of Magic are offered membership at no charge.[9]

The library of the Guild is vaunted as being incomparable and unrivaled in all the Flanaess for its contents. There are no other archives of arcane works which have the sheer breadth of rare tomes and librams found at the Guild Library. Even the spellbooks and notes of Zagig Yragerne are hidden here in a secret vault.

The library is known to contain copies of Chronicle of Secret Times, Beasts of Humanity, Dragon-Scale Tome, and Treatise on the Practices of Hidden Ones.

Rumors and legends

In Living Greyhawk

In "City of Greyhawk—Clerkburg (part 2)", LGJ #5, Erik Mona and Denis Tetreault wrote that Jalucian had relinquished his leadership position.

"Kieren (Jalucian) was invited to join [the august order, the Circle of Eight,] after the destruction of Otiluke and Tenser, but that he refused due to his duties as master of the Guild of Wizardry (on top of his position with the university). Now that he has passed on his role in the guild to another, it may only be a matter of time before he opts to join Bigby, Otto, and the others. That is, if Mordenkainen, who has openly derided Jalucian as a “hopeless idealist,” will have him."[17]

His successor was unnamed, and no further details were given. It may be assumed Mordenkainen did not accept his nomination.

However, the articles or adventures after this LGJ issue did not follow this story element in the LG continuity. It is unclear if it was decided against, or if later authors simply missed it in research.

Publication history

The Guild of Wizardry was first detailed in The City of Greyhawk boxed set (1989) by Doug Niles, Carl Sargent, and Rik Rose.[18].
