Lake Matreyus (also known as Matreyus Lake or Storm Lake) is a large freshwater lake in the Amedio Jungle.
Description
"This huge freshwater lake, recently named for a Keoish explorer, lies deep inside the jungles of the Amedio. When volcanic ash falls upon it, its waters produce supernatural effects harming the landscape and living creatures nearby, earning it the epithet "Storm Lake." Olman tribes consider it holy, and take to the waters in great bargelike rafts during certain seasonal rituals in order to make offerings of gold and other treasures. Ancient, accursed ruins are on the north shore."[1]
"The north side of this lake is the former Olman city of Elatalhuihle, later discovered by Suel who fell victim to or caused a great curse on the place. Trees line the shore and produce useful or valuable materials. The lake is inhabited by giant clams whose pearls command good prices, as does the plumage of the brilliantly colored birds. Gigantic, ancient statues of stylized human faces and upper torsos dot the shoreline, most erect but some fallen and overgrown by vegetation; poisonous and disease-bearing animals lurk near the statues, and bodiless undead have been seen in their shadows during the half-dark of dusk and dawn.... The Amedian tribes of the south shore consider this place to be full of evil spirits and never come here."[2]
Storm of Unknowing
The volcano, at the edge of the Hellfurnaces, erupts at irregular intervals spanning generations. Intervals range between twenty and forty years. When it does so, the ash cloud from the eruption drifts over the northern shores of the lake, and remains there (without settling) for several days. Until it dissipates several days later, magical effects such as continual darkness are common. The acid rain falls from the ash cloud, and undead—like spawn of Kyuss and vampiric mists—and other evil creatures are more common. Lightning strikes the ancient statues there, while leaving them unharmed but destroying anything nearby.[2]
