Irafa Road
Region: Ket
Origin: Avernand
End: Nesser
Crosses: Bramblewood Forest

The Irafa Road is the only main thoroughfare between the Western Flanaess and the Eastern Flanaess. It is defended by eight forts along its length, by the Ketite army.[1]

In Living Greyhawk

The Irafa Road was built some 300 years ago by Keoish invaders when Keoland invaded Ket.[2] The harrying attacks by the Ket resistance convinced the Keoish leadership that a faster route was needed for moving troops into northern Ket. Otherwise, troops needed to march around the entire periphery of the Bramblewood Forest.[citation needed]

To this end, the Keoish soldiers, with great loss of life from elves and other predators, hacked a road straight through the narrowest part of the forest, from north to south. Discovering that to stay outside overnight was to die, the army also built seven forts along its length,[2][note 1] each a day’s march apart.[3] The Irafa Road enters one side of the fort and leaves through the other side.[citation needed]

When the Ketite fighters finally succeeded in driving the Keoish troops out of Ket, they set about converting the forts of the Irafa Road to their own use.[2] Today, the forts feature all the latest in tactical and magical defenses, including a kill zone[3] around each fort of 750 feet, anti-teleportation magic and other defenses that are listed as state secrets.[citation needed]

The forts of the Irafa Road "from south to north... are Avernand, Daris, Monochehr, Stivang, Mahboud, Maldonius and Nesser."[3] Fort Avernand and Fort Nesser are large, fortified towns with defensive walls and larger garrisons. The remaining forts are "huge stone keeps nestled in the forest".[3] Patrols of Kaman constantly move up and down the Road,[2] ensuring that it is kept free of obstacles, elves, and other monsters.

Notes

  1. in 594 CY, there is a difference between the official Living Greyhawk Gazetteer and the Ket region of the Living Greyhawk campaign. The number of forts is given as either eight, or seven. Plot events may have occured in which something happened to one fort, explaining the difference.
