Character creation

  • Options are limited to those available in the Players Handbook (2024) and DnDBeyond Basic Rules (2024)[note 1] Other new sources made be permitted as they are published; previous fifth edition sources are not permitted.[1] Optional rules from the DMG (e.g. custom backgrounds) are not permitted for character creation.
Players are encouraged to use a free account on DnDBeyond.com for character creation.[2] Though it will never be compulsory,[3] and players may use either digital or print versions of their characters.
  • Ability scores are generated using either the "standard array" or "point cost" methods.[1][4]
  • Evil alignments are not allowed.[1] "D&D assumes that player characters aren’t of an evil alignment."[5]
  • All characters begin at level 1.[1]
  • Characters may begin with a "trinket" from the PH2024 Trinkets table.[2]

On 24 July 2025, a week before the campaign debut at GenCon, WotC released the first the Living Greyhawk Guide v0.5 beta. It covers character creation, and is a single page with a second page which includes an FAQ.[1][6]

Advancement

The system by which player characters advanced levels is based upon number of sessions played, rather than exact XP (as is common in organized play).

The Living Greyhawk Guide v0.5 beta raised the number of adventures required to go up in level. The PC's level becomes the number of adventures required to gain the next level. One adventure to get to level 2, two more to level 3, three more to level 4, and four more to level 5—for a total of ten adventures to reach level 5. All levels beyond that are four adventures to gain the next level.[1]

In the early previews, one session played got a PC to 2nd level, a second session got a PC to 3rd, five total sessions earned fourth level, and eight total achieved fifth. The precise number of sessions per levels, however, changed via feedback from the playing community after the previews.[7]

Magic

Each character can bring a limited number of magical items into an adventure, depending on the level of the character before the game. [8]

During the game the party can encounter all kind of wondrous things that they might use during the adventure, regardless of the limit. When the adventure is over, each player choose if they would want the game to count as an advancement towards leveling, if they choose to advance as normal they then can choose between three sets of rewards. a) A specific magical item specific for the adventure together with a small part of the treasure in gp. b) A big part of the treasure in gp. c) A random magical item rolled from a predetermined list, together with a small part of the treasure in gp. The choices rewarding a magical item can only be chosen if the character have room for an item of that rarity The character can only leave the adventure with a limited number of magical items, depending of the level of the character after the game.

Organizations

There will be organizations from officially published sources available for player characters to join, e.g. Knights of the Hart.[9]
